Seemed to be true today. However, we have used them recently for registration issues on a car.

Brad,
I was not told anywhere I needed a smog check.

Paid registration and got hold notification.

Then registered and sent pics to CARB and a compliance fee to Clean truck check.

Registration was then sent in the mail.

I think they are going there soon to smog check.

I think they want the info that you are a motorhome and not a commercial vehicle posing as a motorhome.

Well, we paid our registration fees online and the charge went through. However, it said the tags will not be issued because of a CARB hold.

I checked the date of manufacture on my engine data tag and it said October 1996. Chassis was sold to BlueBird in October 1996.

I am going to install a new air filter and go for an opacity check. I hope it passes. No computer or sensors on this engine.

The whole thing is a cluster ####. Mine is a 96 and they didn't require me to get an opacity test. I got one anyway because I wasn't clear on the whole process. I think the opacity test won't be required for another year. Mine easily passed. I wouldn't worry too much about the air filter.

When you do the three throttle stabs go slow don't just stomp on it. Repeat that pedal speed as closely as possible all three times and you should be fine. That is assuming they are letting you do the throttling. They stood in back of my bus and gave me a thumbs up through the mirror each time I was to proceed with the throttle stab.

Very happy to report my BMC passed the required smog check. Now, I just need to prove to CARB that it is a motorhome.

Default Equipment check

I pulled my muffler, virtually no smoke, do they look under to verify equipment like a car smog test?

Cummins would not let me watch the test or let me into the work area at all.

The tech did look my BMC over and reported some needed maintenance issues that I need to take care of.

On yours and mine they are old enough that there is no smog equipment on these older engines. So nothing to check in my opinion. My Cummins still has a draft tube. No EGR or computer.

Kind of a crazy test as they rev up the engine with no load on it. No load no boost etc. They rev it up 3 times and the readings must be somewhat consistent.

If no one has turned up your injection pump I suspect we will all be fine.

I did ask for a copy of the test results in case CARB does not get it. Because none of these older drivetrains have a computer all information and results must be sent manually and will take a while to show up. I have heard of weeks and or months.

I submitted the images of my BMC to the CARB Excluded Diesel Vehicle website to prove to them it is a motorhome.

Default California to ban new motorhome sales?

Just an FYI california and other states are in affect banning the sale of new motorhomes. Well they arent doing it directly what they are proposing is to ban the sale of recreational vehicles over 8500 lbs unless the manufacturer produces a certain number of EV vehicles. Currently no manufacturer makes an EV motorhome. So that is how we get them banned. According to every article i found this goes into affect jan 1 2025. I looked to see if the legislation has passed and it has not. Im kinda thinking CARB (un elected folks over in Sacramento) is just going to do what they want. Im sure this will see lawsuits as it should. Regardless this doesnt affect us… but what is next. We all might want to wrap out noodles around this and fight it.
