Default Check Those Turbo Exhaust Pipes!

I had a bus arrive at my barn today to have the hydraulic pump replaced for the radiator fan. After removing the radiator, I found another 5" turbo exhaust "U" pipe rotted out. This one was completely seperated and rotted away where it attaches to the turbo in addition to the top being rotted. This was on a 95WB42 (Series 60). This is the 3rd Bird I have seen with this failure. Obviously we are going to replace it but be sure to check the exhaust side of your turbo..

A lot of exhaust was getting pumped into that engine bay directly under the master bed!

Chris what kind of mileage are you seeing on the Coaches with this issue?

Yes, great reminder to us all. That is very scary. It does not take that big of a leak to melt things and cause fires. What does the bottom of the bedroom floor insulation look like? Kind of surprised that one didn't trigger a FIRE alarm snapdisk at some point since it was probably shooting straight at it.

Most were rotten by 150,000 miles. By the time I get to them they are trashed!!

The insulation on the back wall was hammered from the heat. On my bus the ceiling has hammered really bad! I always had a warm bed though! It is really dangerous. I am not sure why the snap disc did not go off.

I cleaned my turbo tubes on my 8V92 (and bead blasted them and then painted them with High Heat Header paint), in 2015 before the Alaska trip. I had them also wrapped in header wrap.

This year, I inspected them after the engine overhaul and when I took the wrap off, there were some very thin places that indicated the pair of mild steel turbo tubes needed to be replaced. I used stainless tubing and clamps this time and wrapped them again, but will unwrap them every other year to confirm their safe condition.
