Default New Rear Brake Drums???

Getting ready for an upcoming trip, I had my State Inspection done. The coach passed but is ready for rear brake pads and during the inspection the drum was found to have many small cracks. Recommendation is to replace both rear drums. For now it is safe to drive according to shop.

I'll call Ft. Valley to get parts...maybe pickup on way back from FL. as those drums would be $$$ to ship.

My question, why can't these drums be turned like a car drum to remove these tiny surface cracks? And, any ideas on "discount" sources for such a part (brake drum), I'm figuring that BB is likely the best source but if someone knows of another, I would be game to try it.

Thanks for any info!

They don't turn them, when they crack it's time for new ones. We replaced ours at BB for $145 a piece, they are the balanced type, I felt it was fair.

i checked with my buddy that owns atruck parts house, and he could buy them ,but by the time he bought them, shipped them in and made a few bucks he was way higher in price than BB.
they have the deal, thats for sure.
most all big drums are cracked,in the trucking business we ran cracked drums everyday (small cracks).
my feelings are, as cheap as they are, replace them.
turning big drums takes time, cracked drums are as hard as supermans head, trying to turn them is just not cost effective.

I just had the rear drums replaced and they were $209 each plus labor. Don't know if that was good or bad.

Unhappy Brake Drum $$$

Ouch....BB is quoting 430.00 each for rear brake drums for a 85FC; part #1117340. Shipping extra.

Anyone think of another source? And I thought diesel fuel was high!!!

good point Mike, you can buy brake drums way cheaper without the noychs on the drum, but you need the notchs to make the speedo work,

Default Thread Update- 5-3-2010

Just had 2 new drums installed on my '85PT40 at no cost (warranty repair at Cummins) They were kind enough to list the supplier's part number. The notched drums are made by Webb. When I googled the part number, a few matches came up for Blue Bird Buses. For those of you in need of new "notched" rear drive-axle drums- have your parts supplier check Webb #66883B. These are working great on my coach- the cruise and speedometer both are working like they should- so the notches are the right count, spacing, etc... . Never had brakes that grabbed so well. The price quoted was $130.57 each.
