My jake has never been reprogrammed and still kicks in 4th gear but I learned early on to slow before an unknown hill to at least 55mph and be ready. I could not imagine driving without it.

I hadnt thought about programming the jake to just leave it in 6th, then manually shift myself. I like that idea.... The allison shop next door to where my engine was rebuilt wanted almost $500 to reprogram. I hate to sound cheap, but thats crazy.

On a side note, I was getting almost 1.5 mpg more on my 700 mile trip home after the rebuild. Didnt feel any different. Maybe it was due to the trip computer being reset? I was driving just about the same, cruise speed usually between 68-70. Who knows... it was nice to have the coach back. I kinda missed her

So glad you are happy to be back in the driver's seat instead of frustrated with the ordeal and ownership. Definitely get the Allison reprogrammed. W. W. Williams did mine recently. It was a 30-minute job (hook up the laptop to the 9-pin diagnostic port on the grey box by the start batteries). They state they charge $150/hour. I got off cheaper than that. $500 is highway robbery.

Reprogramming to 6th may not be the best option in my opinion. That would mean you will be manually downshifting "all-the-time". Reprogramming to 5th gear ensures you won't over-rev when travelling 60-65 mph. If you need to downshift further manually you can. Just my 2-cents.

Andy reprogrammed our S60 jake brake to 5th gear at WOG, very happy with the results, just enough "grab" to slow at 65mph, not so aggressive like 4th and for mountains slow down before you go down, select lower gear.
