Josh,

Here is some more reading concerning the The Jacobs Engine BrakeĀ® which is a device that mounts on, or within, the engine overhead (JAKE BRAKE) and is the one being discussed here in this thread. You need to also be aware that Jacobs Vehicle Systems also manufactures the Jacobs Exhaust BrakeĀ® that some folks also call a JAKE BRAKE it is basicly the same design as a PacBrake which is installed in line with the exhaust pipe itself, you can find a full explaination of all of their systems by going to http://www.jakebrake.com/ the use of the almost generic word JAKE BRAKE can cause a lot of confusion sometimes.

Bob Greisel from our NW Bluebirds installed a Telma in his FC.
Costs were in the 11,000 range.
Maybe cheaper east of Seattle,, don't know tho.

Default jake in a 92

Guys and gals... I,m in the process of wanting to install a Jake in my 92 bird W/ 8v92.. I have contacted the father, son that curt recommended and it is moving along to have the jake installed but was told today by a long time diesel guy that with my allison 5 speed I need to make some modifications to my tranny,, something about droping the tranny pan and drilling holes in the main body and adding something that will lock-up the tork converter or the jake won,t work... My question is ,,,have any others that have the 8v92 with the 5 speed allison , installed a jake and does it work ?? Has anyone heard of this having to be done to the tranny or is the guy that told me it won,t work,,, crazy......... appriciate any help that I can get......... Dan S.

Dan

Not to worry it's just a switch that screws into a port already on the Allison. There is another switch also added to throttle/governor housing.
This is on a 6V92 install most likely it'll be the same for 8V92 the instructions reference both motors.

Default jake brake stuff

Have been in contact with Detroit, Allison and Jacobs in preporation for the install on my 8v92.. If you do this mod . I am told you do need to also address the allison transmittion.. I have an Allison HT-755 5 speed ATEC (electronic shift) transmittion so I only need to connect a 16 gage jumper wire to the trnsmittion ( don,t know from what to where till I recieve the instructions from Jacobs) If you have the older Mechanical 5 speed you need to order part # 3591 from Jacobs which is a tranny lock-up switch that is installed in the tranny in a pre drilled and plugged location...I don.t know that my tranny is differant than those others that have installed a jake on there 8v92 but if you did this mod and its working without doing anything to the tranny let me know ,, cause the only thing I can think of is maybe the jake works better if you include the tranny mod also,,, I don,t know.. If you do have any questions about your present or future Jake mod ,, I talked to a guy at Jacobs that was super knowledgable about the Jake install and what you need to do,what works and the kits you need to order.. His name was Bob Hillen and his direct # is 860-302-3053,, Hope i,m not out of line by giving out his # ... As soon as I get the 2 kits with the electronics I will head to Cal. by Ray Butler for the install.. I will keep posting as that moves along... Later Dan S.

Is this Jake brake a little lever that is mounted on my left under dash that only moves 90 degrees? (Mine doesn't seem to do anything when it's moved. no noise differance or gauge changes when it's moved)
I have a 91' SP36. (The ZF retarder works fine.)
