If you have a pit its not so bad,and a small helper like i did,back when i was doing that stuff a lot.
I had to do the above starter hose,long arms and all that stuff,but Glen could get on top of the transmission and do the rest.

hoses replaced. Took about 4 hours. Glad I don't have to worry about them anymore!

Just wondering how much coolant you lose when you change these lines?

I plugged the holes where the lines go and did not have to add much coolant at all

If they blow on the road you lose all of it,thats why its so important to replace them,

After reading this thread, I know that it was critical to get these hoses changed before our maiden voyage in the PT40. Had the hoses built according the the lengths listed in this thread, using stainless steel over teflon hose. Specs say its good to 500 degrees and 2000 PSI. I didn’t have the time, so we took it to a nearby diesel mechanic. Short hose was a breeze, but at first he couldn’t see the long hose forward of the heat shield. I gave him the picture of the shiny, out of bus engine with bright blue hoses. He did end up pulling the starter to get to the block end. I know that he, and assistants, spent way more than the 4 hours he billed. Total cost was under $1000, hoses, labor and coolant.

And the old hoses shattered as soon as they started touching them!

Another 8V92 saved from an untimely death!

Default Changing coolant lines

This is Great info thanks everyone. Going to get my hoses tomorrow. The hoses are 1/2" correct?

Randy, can you get us a picture, maybe showing dimensions, of the special 2 foot long wrench you made for getting the coolant hose/fitting off near the starter. I just read this entire thread and getting ready to do my (new to me) 1995 WLWB with 8V92. I have the bedroom floor opened for the alternator repair, so I will get the coolant lines done too.
Also, what are the few other hoses/lines going to the compressor ? One is a big diameter going into the passenger side of the compressor, then right above that big one is another smaller line, and then there is a line that comes out of the forward face of the compressor under the coolant line. And should we replace these other lines ?
