Portal RV Resort, 1261 N Hwy 191, Moab UT / 435-259-6108 / portalrvresort.com - N side of town, 2 or 3 "resorts" S of the river. Nicely kept place well off the highway, so it's quiet with clean showers & close to everything downtown as well as Arches NP entry. Was ok for a couple nights but pricey at $42.50/nite for 30 amp & water (w/ AARP or Mil retiree ID - 50a FHU $5 more). Asked and there's no weekly or monthly rate. Sadly, tomorrow we're headed south toward the furnace called Phoenix (107 F tomorrow ). After a month of moderate temps, adjusting to that will be difficult.

On our way back after toad touring Canyonlands NP today we drove through an alternative I wish I'd known about earlier: http://web.archive.org/web/201605020...orsethief.html. It was almost empty with lots of open & spacious level sites, some with awesome views. Ten min to Canyonlands NP front gate, 15 min down-the-hill to the main Hwy 191 and 30 min to Moab. We love off-the-grid camping in out of the way remote places and this one would've been top of our list, had we known about it. No hookups of course, pit toilets, likely DARK - star filled skies, incredible mountain bike & hiking trails, an on-site Host and $7.50/nite with geezer pass. Oh well, next time!

Added: the second paragraph of this page http://web.archive.org/web/201605030...mpgrounds.html lists 5 BLM CGs near Moab that can handle large RV's but take no reservations. There's also Dead Horse Pass State Park that does take reservations: https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/dead-horse/park-fees/. Called them when we arrived in Moab but they were booked solid. There's also Willow Flat CG inside Canyonlands NP that's small but walking distance to one of the nicer overlooks. It only has 12 sites, doesn't take reservations and is listed as 28' max. Getting in would've been tight but doable & we found 3 sites there where we'd fit. At 2 pm all except the spacious handicap site was occupied. If we had another week, with Toni's tag I would've grabbed it! A few years back we stayed in Devils CG deep in Arches NP & loved it. That required reservations 6 mo in advance but it was awesome! Unfortunately it's closed this year for renovations. (IF you haven't done it yet, try to get reservations on the NP web site for the Arches NP Firey Furnace hike - highly recommended!!) Next time instead of a high $$$$$ commercial "resort" we'll stay longer and find a place in one of the above!

Lastly, a hearty thanks to you, Pat, Larry & Barb for all hard work that made Casper the huge success it was!

If you think that's pricey don't come to northeast campgrounds. I wish it only cost that per night!

Default Moab-Bound!

Kelly and I are heading to the OK RV park in Moab for 3 days. A whopping $24 night for 50A + full hookups with Passport America. They had back-ins available yesterday if anyone is interested. https://goo.gl/maps/yJpoDdpdV8J2

BTW,

Glad everyone enjoyed the Eclipse Rally!! Pat & I stressed a lot over it, but it worked out better than we thought it would...

We are now in full recovery mode, relaxing till we get home next month.

Joe/Pat,

I want to thank you guys again for setting everything up. The same goes to all the others that helped. I don't envy the myriad of headaches I'm certain you guys endured.

We didn't get there as early as we planned and had to leave sooner than we liked, but still had a great time. Hopefully we'll see you at another rally sometime...another rally that someone else is in charge of coordinating.

Thanks again Joe and Pat for all your hard work. It was an awesome rally. It was worth the drive where ever you came from.

Another view of the eclipse
