Default Allison ATEC computer - how can I talk to it, what can it say?

folks,

not finding a lot of info on searching for this, so:

How much information does the allison ATEC ('87 PT40, mechanical 8v92, 4spd - presumably HTB-748R from what docu I have) computer track?

Obviously it can throw codes - does it do useful things like track mileage, hours or anything else internally?

I think I found the diagnostic plug - in front of the drivers left foot, 6-10" off the floor maybe higher. dual row plug.

What diagnostic tools interface to this? Obviously it's not likely anything modern and cheap would, but it might be worth knowing.

I've come to the realization that both the odo and hour meter are broken for a long time - so I'd love to be able to extract trans mileage if there is any way to do so. but even if not - nice to find out what -can- be found out.

I have seen ATEC repair and/or user manuals on Ebay. They may spell out how to get the info you are seeking

AFAIK you cant get mileage or hours from the ATEC...

See the files section for the codes it will throw out.

To read the codes you'll need a nexiq prolink, you might find one at a reasonable price on ebay.
You need a prolink plus and the right module for your transmission.

thanks - it was a hope... (it does have the possibility of a speedo output (we dont use it), so thought maybe)

thanks - my check light is currently stuck on, which is on the list of things to troubleshoot when I get the rear in the air (John Wyatt gave me some good ideas).

is the prolink the only way to actually read the codes?

seems like they should be able to be read via flashing lights (the check light presumably), but I haven't really found how to interpret those if that's the case..

Prolink or flashing lights...

John will have good things to check if your light is on, I'll throw in a few thoughts...
IIRC that light is controlled by a relay, which is controlled by an output from the ATEC, if its working you can hear it click.. Check the relay for power etc.
If not may be a bad ATEC output? Pull the plug and see if the light goes off.

The info you want is this I think:

You read the flashes like, 1 flash, space, 2 flash = 12 = low lube
