Default Rear Axle Temp

Looking for some ideas here.

Sometimes my Rear Axle Temp increases past 250 degrees, even until it is "pegged". It takes 2-4 hours at highway speed to see this.

Is this typical?

What would be the suspected issues with this?

All fluids are new and topped off.

How do you know this temp? Is it on the outer bearings?

Just reading the gauge on the dash. The tech manual says there is a hole where a temp gauge could be used. Doesn't say much else. I'm thinking it is not at the bearings, but just measuring the temp of the lubricant that covers the differential.

Just a guess.

My FC had a differential temperature gauge on the dash. I never saw it go above 220* after replacing the third member on the SP, I shot the housing with a laser and got no higher than 218* after several hours at highway speeds.

That's a new one on me, too.

I would think if it is reading correctly that "over 250" and "pegged" is too hot !

Fred an Infrared Gun shot at your differential would help confirm or deny your guage readings. You can usually get one at Harbour Freight for around $30 or less on sale. Great for checking tire, wheel, bearing etc etc temperatures.
