Default ZF transmission shifting like a city bus.

Hi Folks,
Wish I knew this when I bought my 87FC.
Passed on this info to the new owner.
ZF setup the shift points for city bus driving.
Driver sees an opening in traffic, puts the throttle to the floor.
When the bus reaches his desired speed, let’s off on the throttle.
Stops, unloads, reloads, finds a hole in traffic, floors the throttle.
All day long.

It's probably better for the transmission to keep your foot in it rather than feathering it around. It's my understanding that he tranny slips more at partial throttle...

I run mine in eco mode instead of power. I find it shift sooner and better suited to my driving style. The power mode seems too aggressive to me.

The ZF has a mind of it's own.... and it's in a tan coloured box under the shifter. That computer works well for the most part, but downshifting on a hill is where it's very different than an Allison.

I'm the new owner of Bruce's FC35 and I have to agree. I did some large grades today on my way home and getting it to drop a gear was rather strange. It did great though and wasn't as slow as I was afraid it would be.

At 1800 rpms push peddle to the wood then it will shift down. Wait to long and you will drop out of power curve

This is good info, anyone have further explanation of why it would fail to downshift when it gets to lower rpm/road speed? Am I just not “flooring it” enough?

You have to push hard. There's definitely a switch you'll feel.
