Possibly deteriorating flexible fuel lines at the 3208 connections. Old lines can collapse internally and restrict fuel flow. What kind of hills are we talking about? Mine gets near the red when in 2nd gear full throttle at about 26 mph on steep grades. But it is much better under normal circumstances.

thanks -- yes the filters were bad and the tank had a lot of bad stuff in it. that was cleaned out changed all filters but still the problem occurs -- only goes into the red on sever hills max fuel flow on lesser hills its up in the yellow and goes back down, but it used not to do this was always close to 0.

we will check the flexi lines on Monday and see if that is the problem. i have learned over the years that problems with the bird tend to be simple ones? just cant figure out a simple fix. thanks for all the help, i am trying to get on the road to Reno on Monday so fingers crossed!

Check your fuel filters again. If they are on or near O when first changed they are doing their job and need to be changed again. Your tank my be contaminated. Then again it may be as Gardner posted. I would first see if the fuel filters are dirty.

The Racor filter housing can build up a huge deposit of black tar inside.
Jay Darst had this problem and maybe Shane as well.

Filters, lines...and next on my list would be the Facet fuel pump (not sure if the '82 FC had them yet?).

During some troubleshooting years ago I disconnected the fuel lines and blew out sections with compressed air...amazed as the crud that came out. Just do a section at a time. A load of WD40 was at times used as a cleaner with the air.

Sound like crud or Algae is clogging up the filters. keep changing filters until it clears up. There is also an algae kill treatment, but small doses over time is better than a full tank shock.
Search this forum for algae, and adding a facet pump. a pump is a good idea, but it will not solve this issue. Drain some fuel from the bottom of the tank, & keep the tank full. Your Bird may have a valve at the bottom or a plug, if a plug remove only if the fuel is below 1/2, there is a lot of pressure when full of fuel.
