Default 8V92 Starter Replacement

I replaced my starter on Friday. Had trouble with the ground connection arcing. Tryed to tighten the nut, and it was damaged from arcing. Then I broke the stud inside the starter.
Got a starter from NAPA, a Wilson 91014107. Short notice, as I was planning to leave Friday at 2, and I tryed to start at 11, to make sure everything was good. Well, 6 hours later, and $500, everything was good.
It didn't realy happen, as I didn't take pictures, but I was on a schedule, so no pictures.
Those 3 bolts are special. Lots of torque required.

I have replaced many of those on fire trucks. I had two chrome moly extensions welded up with short 12 point sockets on them to use on an air impact. If the socket is too long the top of it will catch on the starter case. Always check to make sure the starter nose is clocked properly and the allen capscrews are tight before you lift that beast. All the fasteners should be checked for tightness before you lift. Make sure both ends of the ground cable are clean and bright and your ground at the frame is also. After you get it installed a nap is in order or at least a beer cause you will deserve it.

No nap. Had to jump in and drive. Well shower first, then drive.

Just got done re-installing mine today...... it's not the hardest thing to do, but it's not the lightest thing either (By far)
It was just easier to replace both oil lines by removing the starter first.

We always replace the starters on our Cummins powered trucks with gear reduction starters. They are a little pricier than stock but they are much smaller, lighter and spin the engine faster, not to mention that they are so much easier to change out.
I wonder if they make them for 93 series DD's?

Yes they do make a gear reduction unit.
Just installed one on my 8v92.
40 lbs lighter with alot less amp draw.
Sorry no part numbers right now as I'm at work
But my price was less than 425 for a NEW unit not a rebuild
