Question Cruise Control Related to Towing?

I am having a strange problem with my Bendix cruise control. The control module is new, and the air cylinder has been rebuilt. When towing our jeep the cruise works fine, when not towing the cruise won't even engage. What difference would connecting to a towed vehicle make to the cruise control? Has any one else experienced this? Thanks Joe

There may be some leakage in the brake light circuit (pressure switch or bad ground) that is signaling to the cruise that the brakes are engaged. The additional load of the toad may absorb the current making the cruise see no signal on the brake light circuit.

Try measuring the voltage at one of the brake lights on the coach with the toad disconnected, and then with the toad connected. With the brakes not engaged there should be no voltage on the brake light circuit.

Bad grounds can do so very weird things, and this kind of problem is a likely suspect. Tail light and brake filaments in the same bulb share a ground. If the ground is bad tail light current will flow through the brake light filament searching for a ground or partial ground through another bulb in the circuit. Clean all of the taillight/brake light sockets and ground connections before digging deeper..
