Default Front, overhead TV removal on 1990 PT

I am looking at replacing the front, overhead, TV on Smoke N Mirrors. IT is the OEM, 6 ton model! LOL

However, it is surrounded by wood trim. How does that come off, to allow the TV out? I do not want to wreck anything.

Looking at a nice, LED replacement for it. Much lighter, might get it with the DVD built in.

Thanks for your advice.

My 86 didn't have wood trim, rather something with vinyl wrapping. I took the left and right panels off first, they come out after turning the two big screws on each side and pulling them out. Then I had access to see how the TV was attached and I removed all the screws and got that dinosaur out of there. I then put a sheet of wood behind it that had the mounts for the LED TV and hung the TV on those mounts. Maybe a picture of your setup would help, I think you have the Royale conversion so lots of wood in there instead of vinyl.

Yeah, it is the Royale conversion. There is a black band around the TV, and wood trim around that. I will check again, to see if screws on the side. I am understanding that these hold the trim on? So they would be right at the front. I will see if can get pics.

if the 90 is like the 95, the front face is basically one piece, with little plugs to hid the screws. Just remove the plugs and screws, the wood trim comes off and you will see how it is attached.

sometimes the tv is in a plywood box,the box is screwed in from each side.
open the cabinets to each side and look for screws going in at a right angle.
the tv and box should all come out together.
Beware, thats going to be a heavy load, over your head when it comes out.

Might want to check with Michael Campbell. He has an 88 Royal conversion (thunderbird)with all the nice wood framing and cabinet work. Pretty sure he switched out or has figured out how to change the CRT to a flat panel on his.
WOG Id Michael3536.

I did the same as Markus on my 88 WB. Removed the trim frame around the old TV and attached a piece of plywood behind it with a simple TV mount to the plywood. I spent a bunch of time getting that mount looking nice but when I hung the new TV, you couldn't even see it. I found the biggest TV that would fit between the two side doors.

Our 90 SP has the wood front overhead. I used a piece of aluminum tread plate on the back of the TV attached to a piece of piano hinge. The hinge is attached to the wood framing of the old CRT. The new TV is held down with Velcro. When I open the TV one door on each side holds the TV up. Nice easy setup that Lee Davis would be happy with (cheep).

I like that idea Rick - I might have gone that way if I had it to do over.

Hi Melvin,

I'm not sure how your TV comes out but for what it's worth the attached pdf shows how I removed the old Television from my 91.

Pic. I see no plugs to remove. Or any way on the black aroound tv.

There are side panels inside the doors beside the tv. I am thinking I need to figure out how to remove those side panels, and then maybe I can access screws either on the back, or the sides, that hold it in. The wood front is out too far to have screws in from the sides, but maybe either from the back, or the wood trim is attached to the black, and that has screws in from the side.
