Default Severe Front Tire Wear

We recently returned from a trip to Louisiana. When I got out of the coach at the end of the trip I noticed the passenger side front tire had worn down to the steel belt on the outside corner. Quite a shock for a tire that was less than 3 years old and had 12,000 miles on it. Inflation pressure was normal at 105 psi. Driver side tire was fine. I think we were lucky not to have had a blow out on the way home. Lot of bumps on I-10 and many stretches under construction have no shoulder.

Got the tire replaced with another Michelin XZA2 315/80R through the FMCA discount program. Took the coach to Aquirre Body and Paint in Buda. They couldn't adjust alignment due to corrosion of the tie rod adjusting nuts. Local Meritor dealer said it would be more than a month to get new tie rods. Randy told me to check with Dan Hartley at Coachparts.net. Dan had the new tie rods and shipped them immediately. Picked up the coach today and it drives fine. There was no clue of a problem while driving the coach before the repair. It pays to check tread wear frequently and get alignment checked if you see anything unusual.

It looks like more of a camber issue than a toe(alignment) issue. I'm not sure you would even feel a camber that was off.

I had Josam align my frontend, they said camber is critical on the 380 frontend, and difficult to get right, I hope the shop was experienced on IFS alignment.

Thanks for the comments. I have a lot of confidence in this shop as they do major truck and bus suspension rebuilds and repairs every day. They are equipped to work on and align heavy duty independent suspensions. They are well versed in Meritor suspensions and have the tools needed to work on them, including ball joint replacements. I'm not an expert on diagnosing tire wear but will ask the shop about camber adjustment.

Reading over the Meritor manual for this suspension, there is no mention of camber adjustment, only toe-in.

Another factor in this problem could have been a leak in the air supply line to the level control valve on this wheel which they also found and repaired. I do regular walk around inspections of the coach during breaks on any trip. Never noted any indication that suspension was down on that corner. If this was the case, I would expect wear on the inside of the tire rather than the outside.

Eric, Josam’s invoice shows an addl charge for camber adjustment on one side, I assume the other side was in spec.
Here are pics of the alignment specs, before & after. Sorry they’re sideways

Found this manual on my iPad stash from brake fiasco a few years ago. Covers IFS, Rear, Brakes, Tranny & a couple other systems. Not sure if it’s already in the WOG files:

Great find Van! (now that I don't have my 380 any more) For those M 380 owners that were interested in how the front air bags are configured, page 7 of this manual shows the top plate and how it is separate from the rest of the bag. It may cover replacing the bag later in the manual, but my internet connection is limited and I didn't get that far.

Thanks for the information Van. I only had section on the Meritor suspension. Nice to get more on tranny and other components.
