Try starting the bus from the engine start switch. I had a similar problem with my SP36 and was able to start it from there. Turned out to be the three way selector switch was giving me issues.

Mine was doing nothing when turning key. Wiggled the cannon plugs as I turned the key then it would start. Ended up wiring around it. On my 1982 the hot from the ignition got old so I replaced it and that worked

If yours has a remote start switch that may get the engine going , but if the shift pad is not lit up the transmission probably won't work .

Default Mystery Solved

Well, the mystery is solved. Since David Hollis shared his schematic about the ignition wires I decided to start under the driver's window and see if power was there. I found a big, and I mean a big surprise. Wrapped in many wires and caught in a trap I had forgotten I put in there was a dead rat as big as a small squirrel. Not a mouse, a monster rat. He was pretty dried out but he was so wrapped in the wires it took a while to extricate it. I think there is a picture below. Most of the fur is gone but he is about the same size as my foot.

Several wires appeared to have been chewed. It was a little difficult to figure out because some were part of what appeared to be an unused harness and the ends we just clipped, not chewed. One long wire that was put in as an extra ground when I had the transmission computer replaced about ten years ago was chewed in half but the other end was buried behind a few harnesses and I could not find it. So started checking power and found that power was at the appropriate points, the breaker, the relay, and up in the black computer relay box. So I started putting wires back together, starting with the ones that appeared clipped and not used, hoping that didn't screw up anything. The nice thing about Spartan and BMC's is that the wires are actually labeled. So attaching those clipped wires (of the same color) didn't seem to help anything or hurt either. In the process of doing that I found the end of the chewed off red ground wire way back hidden in the wire mess. I put that wire back together, nothing changed. However, that wire had a 10 amp fuse in it so I opened it up to check that and the fuse was blown. So after replacing that fuse, voila, the trans light came back up and the bus started. Yay! So that was the problem. I will be replacing that trap in that compartment. It's interesting that about a month ago (we have been in this campground for a while) we smelled what seemed to be a dead "mouse" we thought was somewhere under the dash. We looked under there as best we could but saw nothing. So knowing they eventually dried out and quit smelling, we just put an air freshener under that area and sure enough, a week or so later, the smell went away. Never thought to look in the driver's window compartment (a good tip for all of us). But apparently that guy had done the damage before being caught and expiring. I'm glad we decided to air up the bus(we do that about once a month when we are staying someplace for a while) to check everything or we would have had this problem the day we are supposed to leave. So it's all good now.

Thanks, guys for all the tips about where to check. Those were helpful as I could check my progress in getting the situation solved as I did various things (reattaching, etc.). Now I am an electrician. (Ha! that is a joke) This Forum is a great thing. Click image for larger version

Default Campgrounds

Before you guys comment on the low rent places where we stay (i.e. rat-infested) I have to say this is nothing new. We had rat problems before when "guests" at another Blubirder's house (who shall remain nameless) where a rat chewed through one of my main airlines and when we were getting ready to leave, the bus would not air up. I obviously need to spread around more traps in the places we stay.

Glad you got it all fixed up . Mice and Dirty Rats can do a lot of damage . Living in the woods , we have to battle them on a regular basis.
