Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Default Oil use on 3208 turbo?

Hey guys. Have had the rig out on the road a good part of the summer. Checked the oil and it was nearing the low line so I added approx 1/3 gal to get to full. I’m guessing 1500 miles or so...perhaps a bit more. Is that normal or good for this engine?

Point of reference, last trip to Idaho from WI 4k miles round trip, fresh 3 ring engine as not broken in, needed two quarts when I finished the trip.
Straight weight 30 generic diesel engine oil from a farm supply outlet with a couple bottles of STP.
Had consumption issues years ago, cried to Dupree, above information was his response.
I was running Delo 15/40 @ the time.

Straight weight w/STP is recommended.

If I am reading Mike correctly; He is saying that you should be using straight 30 weight oil and adding STP and not be using Delo 400.

I run Delo 400 15/40. Service records show a combination of Rotella-T 15w40 or Chevron Delo 400 15w40 in use throughout its 31 years, 162,000 miles and 4200 hours of service life. After fixing a major oil leak I can now tell how much oil it uses or leaks. It's next to nothing.

I have put on 2500 miles this year so far and added nothing. It's still on full. I use only Delo 400 15w40.

It's your dime, but keeping the oil changed with Delo 400 15w40 works for me. No additives except for the fuel.

My 3208 is always started with supplemental heat to minimize wear. Almost zero idle time, except before shutdown. Oil always changed before going into winter storage.

I am not a mechanic, but that's my experience.

I also ran 15/40 Delo in our 88 FC. After resealing the oil cooler never used more than 1/2 a qt. In 20 00 miles .i think that Cat's updated lube guide says you can use multi grade. STP is ancient stuff.
Today's oils are light years ahead of the oils from 30 years ago.

Sounds like Dupree and I are sadly out of touch. So be it.
