Default Suggestions

The Heckman's are heading out tomorrow and I am looking for suggestions for places to stay and see in the Finger Lakes area of NY. We are basically climbing in and setting out with no plans made or reservations. My intention is to head north on I 81 to Binghamton and then on to where ever and what ever. I have 10 days or so and am just looking for a relaxing vacation with all options open. Would like to stay away from extremely congested traveling but other then that you guys tell me. I am taking my fishing equipment and it there are camp grounds with some ponds I might like to soak some worms do a little fishing with no goals for anything serious in that either. Just want to get away, enjoy the time off and of course enjoy the travels in the Bella Mia.

If you wander around a bit you could check out Letchworth (sp?) State Park...sort of the Grand Canyon of the east with trees.

Also a little bit up I-81 is the Thousand Island area...very nice State Park at Wellsely Island (sp?) and lots of nice attractions along the shore.

Suggest you get off the Interstate and run state highways and explore!

Have fun!

John,

As a long time resident of the Finger Lakes (Canandaigua Lake, specifically) I think you'll find it a very nice area. There is a Wine and Culinary center in Canandaigua that is worth a visit, tours around the various lakes to see the wineries (as long as you have something to drive other than the bird). Don't miss a trip to the Wegmans grocery in Canandaigua (especially if you haven't been to a Wegmans before).

A couple of campgrounds in my area would be the KOA in Farmington (off Rt 96 on the Farmington/Canandaigua border (average sort of place although they do have a catch and release pond) and the Bristol Woodlands campground located in the Bristol Hills. Lots of golf, fishing, parks, etc. throughout the Finger Lakes region.

The Corning Glass Works museum is worth a stop if you have time, as well.

Feel free to send me a PM or give me a call at 585-729-0733 if you'd like any further info. I'm in the Denver,CO area right now, or I'd offer to meet you in person.

(If you fall in love with the area, I've got a great house (mine) for sale and would be willing to make a great deal to a fellow bird owner )

We visited that area a few years ago and really enjoyed it. We liked the state park at Watkins Glen, especially if you like to hike. One of the things that we did not do that I later regretted was to visit the glass museum at nearby Corning NY.

Have a great trip.

John, I see you enjoy fishing. Association Island in Henderson Harbor, Ny is right on L:ake Ontario. It has its own small marina, and large spaces. Exit 41 off 81 west on state rt 178. Nearby villages have good food and some entertainment.

Always wanted to tour the Erie Canal and go through a couple of locks - noticed some places offer day and/or dinner cruises.
