Default Compass Installation

My coach had a small cover on the compass hole when I got her. I just bought a beautiful old Ritchie compass off eBay. It is wildly inaccurate when placed on the dash, I assume due to the steel all around. It may think the 3208 is North. I am aware of a technique used aboard steel ships (the red/green sphere either side of the mount) to compensate, but figured my need for accuracy was much less. But not this much less.

Anyone install their own dash compass? Can I count on correcting it thru adjusting the built-in compensators? Anyone know what BB did originally? Did they use a steel boat compass?

Hi John,

Only thing I can think of that may help is a remote indicating compass.

That way you can stick the compass somewhere better than the dash and have the indicator in the dash.

Ive found them pretty cheap on ebay...

See #370229633884 for what Im talking about.
This guy wants way too much for that though, last one I got was only $50 or so.

I installed a compass on the center post and it was spot on. When I installed a fan within a foot of the compass it deviated a little. The adjustments helped but did not totally eliminate the deviation. In all it is off a few degrees. The compass is a great help especially at a glance. How far is yours off? Is there a blower motor close by?? Thank God for GPS!!!

Name??? Luce Goose?

It is way off, 90 or more at times and I've seen it actively spin a bit. I suspect electrical currents nearby are messing with it. I'll try pulling it out and twisting all the wires passing by underneath.
