Thumbs up Desoto SP - Alabama's Premier State Park

All: While everyone is enjoying "Q", I thought I would relate a pleasant surprise:

Martha, J. B. Dogg and I decided this past Friday to take a long weekend R & R. Alabama has a "premier" State Park, just off I 59 South. Its been 25 years since we were last here. What a surprise! Full hookups, 100+ cable channels, 50 AMPs all paved sites and a full service restaurant. Not much going on in the winter, but well worth the drive. Of course only 60 miles for us. Gotta come back in the spring!

Sounds like the GA DeSoto Park is a nice place and readily available for camping.

There is another DeSoto Park down here in St. Petersburg known as Fort DeSoto Park. Its part of the Pinellas County Park System (all the ones I have seen are very nice). and Fort DeSoto Park is an outstanding place. Problem is the campground is always booked in the winter. People have to make reservations a year in advance or stand in line at 6:00 am for a 25 of the sites that are kept available for weekends. If your lucky you can put together a few days here and there and get an early bird weekend spot too.

As you can see in the photos below the camp sites are private and many offer water views and some even have little private beeches too....very romantic! NY Tom S (87 PT38) already has his site picked out!

The park is a great day trip too there is a historic fort to explore and about two miles of pristine beech without commercial development.

Default Desoto SP - Alabama's Premier State Park

Jack & Liz: Quite good, I understand, although I am not a fisherman. I do like to eat them though.

Don't forget Little River Canyon. Deepest canyon east of the big muddy. Lots to do in Alabama. For you value shoppers there's Unclaimed Baggage in the NE http://www.alapark.com/ I love L.A. Lower Alabama
I have been all over ALAbAMA and S.C. 10AC for 40 years.
When we were kids we used to walk across the top of the dam at Desoto Falls so we could jump off into the basin and swim home. No S--T !
Tubed Little River Canyon every May in the 60's and early 70's
Great place for home base, if you come you may not want to leave.
Short drive to Ga.for bus work.

Here's some Home Grown Entertainment

Another good place to go is Mt. Cheaha just East of Desoto Caverns. Highest point in the state of Alabama. Great little restaurant and the top and GREAT view of the surrounding area.
If you LOVE great Chinese food...go to China Luck in Oxford, AL (I-20 just east of Talladega racetrack). Absolutely THE BEST Chinese food ever. People come from Atlanta to eat there.
I lived in Anniston/Oxford while in the Army..and after I retired.
Just my .02 cents worth. Your mileage may vary.
