Great job Ryan! Put me down for a pair. Have you thought about the top boot? I'm going to need a pair of those to.

Here is a link to the pictures of the Split Boot install on Cliff Vaughn's M380 that was performed by Mark Bragdon with assistance from others, Gardner took these picture I didn't watch the complete install, so I let those that were there comment on the pictures. There are too many to post in this thread so I loaded them into the Database, you can find them at;

I resized all of the pictures to 640 x 480 now they should be faster to open.

What type & brand of grease was used to replace and repack the ball joints before installing the boot? Also, what was the procedure? Was the boot glued on one side first, then wrapped around the ball joint, then packed with the new grease, then the other side of the boot sealed??

Was the insulation wrapped around the boot and is it intended to be a permanent addition?

I couldn't determine the procedure by the photos although I appreciate the effort required to take and post them.

Mark did the install with help from a 3rd hand during the final glue application.
The seal was glued on one side and allowed to cure (24 hours) ,then wrapped around assembled and glued using a syringe. I will leave it to the designers and installers to provide the installation procedure, I just took the pics. I didn't delete the fuzzy and redundant ones when I sent them to John, so there are a few bad ones.

The joint was lubed with wheel bearing oil ( 80 or 90 weight) with a syringe through the boot after the install was complete and the glue joint cured. It was determined that there was no way to get thick heavy grease to flow down into the joint.

There hasn't been a discussion on what to do about lubing the upper one yet.

Well, actually, I use the largest needle for horses and grease the ball joints on my Jeep. It takes a while, but you can push grease through it.

We used hub oil to lube Cliffs ball joints.
the reson we used hub oil was his boots were torn for the entire alaska trip, lots of dust, dirt and rain.
His joints were actually squeaking and we were shooting oil in with an oil can every morning.
So,we determined that moly grease we not run down into the joints so we used hub oil, later we can shoot in some moly, maybe it will work its way down where it needs to be.
Ryan will be handling the sales of the boots, shipping from his place down in Clearwater Fl.
This was a great project.
The help from all of you made it possible.
Once again, the power of WOG comes through!

Ryan worked extra hard so we could do this install at the rally,so we could get input from everyone.
Mark did all the work,Gardner took the pics, the rest of us just stood in the way and told jokes!
No beer was killed during this project!

Here is where we are at with the boots...

But first many thanks to those involved especially Mark Bragdon for doing the dirty work installation on the Vaughn's coach at the rally!

Still testing solvent/grease resistance, glue types and clamps. So far things are looking very good

Bottom line is this with regard to the installation procedures, it will basically be just another Wanderlodge greasy job, nothing terribly exciting all in all. Pay special attention to cleanliness and it should take about 4 hours to do both sides, more on this later.

I plan on selling the boots in a complete kit form which will include 2 boots (4 halves), glue, syringe, applicator needle, stainless bottom clamp, top clamp (zip tie type), latex gloves and basic instructions.

Not sure on pricing yet but the kit will be under $300.00
------------------

Hoping someone will move ahead with a heat shield design/development

$300 is a deal.
At that price the mold should be paid for in 2 years, not a great investment by any means.
And thats without any profit,50 sets of boots sales will be required to pay off the mold.
Do we have 50 owners ready to write the check for $300?

OK,the heat shield.
We talked about different style shields, the real way to do it is with a clamp on type,a tin shield that maybe you could clamp on with the boot clamp.

But,theres simply no room for that style shield, the rubber boot is just too darn close to the spindle for anything else to go there.

Gardner has pics, showing the tight clearance.
