Just my 2¢ worth but I suspect your coach probably came from the factory with MGM 3036 piston type brake chambers on the drive axle similar to what are on my 91 WB.
If so, that means that the service brake chambers are 30” diaphragm type chambers and the spring brake chambers are 36” piston type spring brake chambers. An MGM engineer, that I spent quite a bit of time talking to, recommended not changing my service brake chambers from 30” to 36” because it could result in an unacceptable increase in “brake lag time”. The same MGM engineer recommended not going from 36” piston type spring brake chambers to 30” diaphragm type spring brake chambers because 36” piston type spring brake chambers have several hundred pounds more “park brake” power than 30” diaphragm type spring brake chambers. Keep in mind that the “park brakes” are also your “emergency brakes” which means that by going with 30” diaphragm type spring brake chambers, you’re also giving up several hundred pounds of “emergency brake” power on each drive axle brake chamber. The MGM engineer said that the 3036 piston type spring brake chambers like I have are no longer available but that MGM MJS3028ET051 piston type spring brake chambers were a viable replacement for my coach. NOTE: I have not replaced mine so I can't confirm that the MGM MJS3028ET051 would fit my coach. He pointed out that the springs used in the MJS3028ET051 piston type spring brake chambers are able to apply even more force than the springs in the old MGM 3036 “piston” type spring brake chambers that my coach came with. He also said that he would recommend 3036's if I decided to go with diaphragm type spring brake chambers instead of piston type spring brake chambers. My recommendation would be to get the part number off of your old brake chambers and find new chambers that have specifications that are as good or better than the old ones. There's a big difference in cost between piston type and diaphragm type spring brake chambers... but brakes are pretty important. ![]()

Make your own decision! We are only talking about the parking brake here. All of the service brakes are diaphram type, even the service brake part of a piston style chamber.
From MGM: Why a piston style Chamber. MJS Series “Piston/Diaphragm” Spring Brakes are designed to provide dependable service for the long haul, as well as withstand the rigors of “stop and go” operations such as emergency response and parcel delivery. MJS Series Chambers provide fl eets with the ability to keep moving, even with an air leak in the spring side of the unit. Unlike diaphragm type spring brakes, which can be rendered inoperable by a minor rupture in the spring side diaphragm, MJS Series piston brakes continue to function, even if the “piston-seal” becomes worn or damaged. This feature allows the piston brake to maintain sufficient air pressure to “hold-off” the power spring, allowing the vehicle to complete its route and return home for repair, avoiding the high cost of an “on-the-road” service call. This is a benefit fully recognized by an overwhelming number of transit bus operations, worldwide. MJS Series Chambers also provide higher parking forces: as much as 502 lbs. more at 1¼ inches of stroke over an equivalent size double diaphragm model; another benefit recognized by fire truck and emergency vehicle manufactures and fleet operations throughout North America. These trucks loaded with hoses, ladders and other equipment; along with 500 gallons or more of water, are expected to park and hold on all types of terrain: from U.S. Forest Service mountain roads, to the hills of San Francisco, to the streets of New York. Our MJS Series piston/diaphragm brakes meet these expectations every day. MJS Series “Piston/Diaphragm” Spring Brakes: service and dependability you can count on from a name you can trust . . . MGM Brakes.
