John's right, it looks like Dexron III-H is also obsolete. The only Dexron licensed today is Dexron VI.

I'm more interested in the reputation of the company making it rather than whether GM's licensing it. Dexron III would be produced to standards that are part of the quality assurance plan for the company. If they "get away with" something, it comes out in lawsuits sooner or later. They don't want to be there. Dexron III, changed every two years is fine for me.

True, but some outside conformance testing would be nice; barring that, for those who want to continue to run Dexron, the only choice is to go with a reputable company.

Gentlemen,

I may have to reconsider, but up to this point I've used Dexron. I've changed fluid and filters every two years regardless of miles or hours. My average is about is about 7000 miles per yr.

I payed $450.00 here in Nashville for the service. My unit holds 33-34 quarts. 14,000 miles in two years is not very much for a transmission of this type. It does worry me now about whats really going into the transmission when you say.."just give me the regular stuff" Ive always used a certified tech to perform the service.

An Allison mechanic once told me, Transynd is great stuff, but, for the amount of miles I drive I would be OK using Dexron. I guess he would be fired for his advise, I don't know. Its agreed ... especially after research its a great product.

I guess I could bite the bullet and have it changed over. Lets see: 34 qts @ $45.00 per gallon = 11.25 per qt = $382.50 plus labor... providing its 45.00 per gallon?

I know..I know ... changing out or repairing an Allison would never come close by comparison .... but changing after every 12k-15k I've considered this over and over. Hope I'm not making a mistake after years of consideration.

Ten bucks a quart is par for the course. I spend $9.95 per quart for my Schaeffer 7000 Supreme synthetic motor oil and it doesn't last nearly as long.

I found it at Rush Truck Center, who has many outlets, in the greater San Diego area for $41.27 / gallon plus tax.
Still not free, even with my own labor.

I'm leaning towards following Slim's program.

has anyone put any thought into buying a 55 barrel and splitting it with a buddy or keeping for a year and doing the drain and refill then you are working with almost 100 percent transynd as per the maintenance directions
by the barrel it is cheaper than by the gallon
