Default Fuel Costs

Things are dull on the forum the last few days, all Birds must be running with no problems or they are all parked.

Who is coming out of Winter Storage???, with problems??

Has fuel costs slowed down the trips in the Bird???

Has anyone looked into Hypermiling http://www.hypermiling.com/

Basic rules are :
Do not use your brakes; Coast down all hills; Travel the speed limit or lower. Some methods of saving fuel, could be illegal or dangerous.

Patsy & I are heading NW for the summer in about 3 weeks...planning to join up with Shane & Ernie at the Park County Fairgrounds in Livingston, MT 1st weekend in August. Bill, I'm ready to reinstall the sporlan that controls my co-pilots front heater. Stephen Birtles furnished the sporlan kits...diaphram had failed after 18 plus years. Fuel today at our MFA Coop is holding steady at $4.49 per gallon.

Have not tried 'hypermiling'. My C172 is not equipped with speed brakes.

Fuel here in SoCal is right at 5.00 a gallon. Now we are looking at fuel cost vs nights away - might be cheaper for the shorter stays to hit a motel and take the 25 mpg car.

Cool Hypermiling

Great articles. I never knew there was a name for the way I drive.
I do it all the time in the Bird because a big space in front is just safer when you're pushing 25 tons.
Our Toad and my daily commute car is a Jetta Diesel Wagon. I routinely get over 60 mpg (Canadian gallon mind you, so just around 50 miles/US Gallon) combined city highway. I always use cruise control on the highway especially the hypermile accel/decel feature, and I lug it around the City in 5th gear at about 1200 - 1400 RPM. In 5th with no gas pedal it "idles" at just under 30 mph from the torque alone.

I drive 140 km (90 jiles) every day from my farm into the city and back to the farm and I fill once a week!

All in all, I don't feel too bad about the fuel for the Bird.

Default Front Heat Sporlan valve

Dick,

David Thompson 89FC , also has trouble with the Passenger side heat.
This confuses me as the front heat dash switch should control the Sporlan, and both the Driver and passenger heat..
I have a drawing that also shows a gate valve, but it is not on our 88,
So you may have a Sprolan valve ( and /or ) a gate valve.
Lower the coolant or it runs down your hand , arm and into your arm pit.
This does not feel good and I do not think it helps with BO.
