Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Thanks, Bill L. for documenting this repair.
Jeff K, Mike H. for the motivational spark to change this Damper, and the other posters' inputs.
Before heading South to the WOG Rally I chose to replace mine at home.
Bill Lott was a great help on the phone, and am truly impressed with his ability to replace this part on the road. It was not easy or simple. Several of these Vibration Dampers have failed in the last few years, especially on the 3208T 300 HP, Maybe Mike or Randy can comment on this coincidence.

Bill, that balancer looks pretty good but starting to crack on the rubber. Good thing you replaced it and bought your bus that gift. Did you replace your front crank seal too?

No and not up to Mike's approval standards,
but it was not leaking and appeared with out the proper tools, I would get into trouble.

How many hours on your meter now?

I am at 4250 hours and the balancer fell apart when it was removed. You could also see where it was rubbing on the engine mount. Scary to think I drove it to Q like that. Worthwhile proactive repair.

I don't want trouble with MH either , but if you do replace your seal best to get a CAT brand seal so the installer tool works best with.

I did mine recently also. It took heat to get mine off and I used a can of cold air to help get the new one on. Mine was also rubbing against the engine mount.

Jeff’s recommendation to change the seal is solid advice.

I painted after I took the pictures.

How many hours have been on ones that have failed? While I'm sure uts certainly something that should be done, I wonder if there is a trend towards age or use.
