Default Only One Jack Now--R.I.P. Ali

Pair of Jacks has only one Jack Russell on board now. Ali (the smaller black and white one) died suddenly of an apparent heart attack while I was getting generator repairs done at Parliament last week.

Anyone who has walked or camped anywhere near my coach has certainly heard her, if she wasn't visible sitting on her perch on the dash waiting for my return. She would never leave her post even for a drink of water until I came home. Shane described her as "the nicest pit viper-Jack Russell Terrier mix that I've ever known".

She loved all kids and all people (if you overlook the bared fangs when approaching my bus) and hated dogs (no one ever told her she was one herself). Thirty minutes before she left us she had been trying to pick a fight with a boxer and another dog belonging to a fellow BB owner staying at Parliament, and was obviously feeling fine as she scampered up the steps into the bus. When I came up front after a short nap I found her unconscious on floor. There is an emergency vet clinic adjacent to Parliament so I was able to get her into a vet's hands within two minutes of finding her but it was too late to bring her back and as he said we still wouldn't have fixed whatever was wrong. But at least I was spared a harrowing car ride trying to find an emergency clinic in a strange town.

Hank has been being treated for liver problems the past three years and Ali's annual checkup revealed she had the same problem also, but Ali's blood values had not responded to meds and special food that have apparently helped Hank recently. It's unlikely this was the immediate cause as liver failure happens over time with visible and increasing symptoms. Ali has had a faint heart murmur ever since I've had her so this may be related to what took her from me, but I'm very thankful to have been at Parliament which was as much her home as anywhere. Almost everyone there knew her from when we lived there for five months getting my coach ready for the road, and Rick May helped me make a place for her on the Parliament property adjacent to the dog park where she can continue to survey her domain, and it's going to be comforting to have the chance to visit her there when we at Parliament.

Hank seems to miss her too and spends his time just changing from one dog (or human) bed to another, but that is of course how things were when Ali was here. I intend to get another dog soon (probably a rescue) but like Mr. Finn it will probably take awhile for me to be ready for that and to find just the right dog.

She was 10 (Hank's a year older so I guess I had sort of assume he would go first, especially since he had Lyme Disease a few years ago). She left P-mails in all 20 states we visited during our five years on the road together. No one ever told her she was a female so she would lift her leg and mark every spot right after Hank. She was always up for a fight or a nap, and would follow me whenever I went to the back of the coach in the hopes it was time for a shared nap. She will be missed.

R.I.P. Ali

Jim, I'm so sorry about little Ali. I know how much you loved your dogs as I do mine. You were saying she had a heart murmur and my Squirt was diagnosed with that a while back. I'm giving her meds daily but know that anytime she could be taken from me. Dogs are such an important part of our lives, that they turn into our kids. Michele and I will be thinking of you.
