Default Rob Robinson's 'Bird Fire Bakersfield CA

At 6:45pm today my 94 BB experienced an engine bay fire in Bakersfield Ca. We pulled into the Walmart lot at around 5pm, shopped for half an hour, watched tv for an hour and then went to dinner at the Road House. While in the restaurant the fire began. It is most likely electrical in nature but this will have to be confirmed by an inspector I'm sure. When the waitress informed me of the fire all I could think about was our little dog Joey. I ran into the parking lot and was immediately told that Joey was safe. I found him in the arms of a petite little gal. Get this......she borrowed a tire iron, smashed the window in the door, climbed in got Joey and passed him out the window before climbing out herself. All this before the fire department arrived. When the local news arrived and wanted to interview me I gave them a few particulars and told them they needed to talk to this little gal. They did and hopefully she'll get some Attaboys for saving my dog. In the confusion I didn't get her name but I'm going to try and rectify that before long. I'm no expert when it comes to damage assessment but I think this is a write off. I can tell that the fire most likely began in the area of the 3 engine batteries or the main electrical panel directly behind them on the bulkhead. I will take pictures tomorrow. Sue and I will remain in Bakersfield for a few days to sort things out and figure out how to get our stuff home. We'll keep you posted but in the mean time you folks start checking those high current wires.

Good grief! I'm so sorry Rob. This is getting really scary. I'm going to have to check my cables carefully. None of us will be worry free from now on!

Rob:

So sorry to hear the bad news - twice in the last couple months! First Randy's then yours. Causes me to worry, especially at night when we are asleep. Glad you all and your fur-child are safe.

Keep us all posted.

Rob,Sue and Joey,

So sorry to hear this. So glad to know you all are safe and THAT we are all thankful for.

Got me thinking about remote monitoring system. At the house I have an ADT system that is monitored over cell towers. I wonder if ADT or the like could/would monitor coaches on the road and use the GPS to interface for location if they needed to send help... kinda like On-Star I suppose.

One could also have some sort of short range pocket monitor too. This would be particularly useful in areas without cell signal or in the situation you were in.. close by but out of sight.

Sorry Rob and Sue. What a disaster to have occurred at Thanksgiving. At least you can be thankful that someone was enterprising enough to rescue Joey. That would have been a devastating loss. Like Randy said this is a great time to buy another Bird.

Rob called me last nite about this disaster,I'm not sure if you guys all know this, but Rob,Sue and Little joey live in the coach, full time.
They don't have a home to go back to.
All of their stuff is in that bird.
We are in shock over here in florida this morning, its so sad to see your coach and in Robs case, their house and all of their belongings going up in smoke.
