Default KOHLER 7.5 GAS - No Spark

I have the little 7.5 gas Kohler generator in my coach. She's been hibernating for the last few months. Tried starting her today and turns over great, but won't fire, even with ether starting fluid. I pulled a plug wire and do not seem to have a spark. This unit has a magneto ignition, pulled the cap/rotor, all seems good. The little post that has the shutoff spring appears to be grounded. Removed the wire to the overheat switch as well as the little shutoff spring and I still get continuity between the post and the magneto body. I am assuming they are supposed to be electrically isolated correct? Did not see any info on the forum/manuals about troubleshooting the gas engine ignition system.

John, That post should be isolated from ground.

Grounding post is attached to points. There is an insulating washer on the outside, but it seems to just pass thru the metal magneto body.

It has been a few years since I had the 7.5 Kohler on our Kingscraft houseboat, but you might want to check some of the marine forums. I had to take my mag off every couple years and clean it out, it was prone to moisture. I also was able to find a rebuild kit for the mag & I do have a couple spare mags in the garage. I'll check them to see which ones they were, if you can use them they're yours for the shipping.

the screw has an isolator to keep it from grounding to the Mag body.
Bakalite or something.
I have used a small piece of plastic air brake house as an isolator on mag rebuilds.

mine seems to be absent. I will figure out something and see if that improves its attitude.

EDIT. I did not see a way to remove the grounding screw, so I pulled the whole magneto off. Marked it for rotation first. With it off and more accessible, I now can see thee is a nylon insulating sleeve on the screw that appears intact. Still do not see a way to remove the screw without pulling the red Bakelite component that I believe is the internal coil. Should not have to fool with it however. I will remove the condenser and see if it is shorted.

Bad coil I believe. With the coil wire detached, post is not grounded, but red wire to coil has continuity to ground. It looks like new ones are still available, $70 or so.
The coil removal process is not readily apparent, I think I will get some help before I wreck something.
I have a buddy who is an aircraft mechanic, owns a Beech 17, his big rotaries have a zillion mags I think. I bet he knows these things inside and out, if no one here is an expert.
