I'm no expert but I would convert my DN50 to that big air cooled alternator Randy and Clint put on Clint's WB the other day if I had a S60.

Interesting how the Bus determines my spending priority I was hoping to limp the old system with some easy bandaids while I take car of some other stuff on the bus.
Late night yesterday, haven't left the garage. Pulling cable this AM turning on GEN and going for a little trip couple hours north.
Forgot to post diagram bulletin in last nights post, so here it is.

DAve,it got pretty busy yesterday and i forgot to call back.
thats what happens when you don't write stuff down!

We were talking about the alternator when Carol called (had to go,she was on a parts run).
The story goes something like this, that alternator has had 7-8 regulators fail on it,now i don't thing the bus is the problem.
The regulator is between the bus and the alternator (bus being the batteries).
Now that leaves us with the alternator being the problem.
The alternator was rebuilt at some time by somebody,we don't know when,we don't know where and we don't know what they did.
We also don't know what parts (if any) that were installed,Delco? Chicom?

Now i don't have any idea how an alternator works, its full of diodes and things spinning around and around and in your case its full of oil and BAD things.
The bad things are screwing up your spring, making your wife mad, making you pull your hair out, but, the liquor store may learn to love you!
WOW!,too much watermelon last night, and now coffee!

What all that sillyness is leading up to is toss that big old antique problem child into the dumpster and put a new alternator on,hook up the one big wire and a small ground wire and be happy!

I have a pile of those alternators here that Cody could not jump over!
Why do we have a pile?
1-no parts available
2-no shop will work on them
3-they leak oil
4-they do crazy things with volt meters
One day my junkman will come by and this big pile of DN50s will be heading to china.
Along with the brackets!

No worries Randy. I am thinking the same way, I do not feel like chasing this issue endlessly. So much for a quick fix....I should know better. The Alt change to a new one is a project that I wasn't expecting.

Half a day and you will be done.
that DN50 is heavy, and it will leak oil everywhere.

Dave, just thinking out loud, since I'm anything but an expert. It does sound like you should go with changing to the newer alternator that the others have gone to. But so as not to screw up your trip, why not crank up the generator and let it do the work of the alternator and go. Get away from all this for awhile and let your head stop spinning trying to figure it out. Many of us have had an alternator fail and gone for several days without one. Just my opinion.

I tossed my non-functional Leece-Neville alternator off the coach roof, it didn't bounce at all

Great advice Jim, did just that! Having a great weekend parked next to my Son and his wife's camper sitting in the woods next to the river . Bus ran great with the GEN.

There you go. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff. Have fun
