Default Manual Battery Disconnect Switch

I am considering the installation of manual battery disconnect switches for the house and engine start batteries.

Reasons are:

1. Quickly isolate power in an emergency situation

2. Quick and easy disconnect for maintenance

While my coach was recently in a shop for a week for mainteance the batteries all ran down as I could not plug it in. They had GFIs on all outlets.

I want something simple like this:



I have seen prices from $20 to over $200. The main attributes I am looking for are a working amperage of over 180 amps and a surge capability of 1,000 amps as I think that will cover my 160 amp alternator and the starting current of my 8.3 Cummins.

Anyone have a recommended brand or switch they have used?

In addition, thoughts or comments are welcome.

I have a pair of cole hersee manual switches (one for house, one for engine starting battery). Blue Sea Systems makes nice ones as does Guest. Just select one that suits your specifications, many will fit your needs.

There are nice disconnects in the marine industry, like West Marine. I installed an A-AB-B-OFF disconnect in my bus, but I took the starter out of the system, and ran it direct, so as not to subject the switch to the high current.

When I got my bus, it had 1 bank of batteries. So I split them. I put 4 of the 6 to the starter, bank A, put 2 of the six to the inside, bank B. Put an alternator on each bank. Then I used a marine A-AB-B-OFF selector that actual directs the power to the inside. So normally set to B. But I can select OFF. If I have an alternator issue, I can select AB to connect the banks. Or, if I leave something on that drains bank B, I can select A, and start the bus.

That's a Cole Hersee switch. They come in DPST and SPST. That is the switch Parliament used on Prevost conversions. Although I bought mine from Parliament, you can find them online cheaper. Not too expensive. Here's what I wrote in my maintenance book:

The chassis batteries were wired to one post, but a smaller wire was wired to another post, directly from the battery, supposedly to give cleaner power to the ECM. This was changed to wire the second post through a double pole switch so that the battery bank may be completely disconnected. Cole-Hersee 2PST p/n 75907. Good for continuous 300 amps, 2000 amps for 30 seconds. The smaller pole is good for 20 amps continuous.
NB: DO NOT TURN OFF THE BATTERY SWITCH WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, or the spike will blow the regulator.

The coach battery banks were each wired to the same terminal on the shunt. This was revised to wire the banks to a new post, then to the switch, then a heavier wire to the shunt. Cole-Hersee SPST p/n 75908. Switch is good for continuous 300 amps, and 2000 amps for 30 seconds.
NB: DO NOT TURN OFF THE BATTERY SWITCH WITH THE COACH PLUGGED IN.

I've tried the ones pictured above and had problems with internal resistance, especially on the starting circuit. The one listed below is rated for 2750 amps or starting and 500 continuous. It's also weatherproof and will accommodate heavy 2/0 or 4/0 cable nicely. The 3000 model is for a single battery- http://bluesea.com/products/3000 and the 3002 accommodates two banks. I just recommended this on another thread too.

The ebay ad is misleading. I just looked at the manufacturer's page and the continuous rating is 175 amps, not 450.
