Resurrecting this topic. My bus has been experiencing voltage spikes while engine is running bouncing the alt gauge of the scale and back again. Thought my problem was the old bad batteries in bus, but replaced with new AGM's. Engine batteries are also newer and testing good but the spiking continues. Current belief is a bad Voltage regulator? I have the big old box talked about here D443. Pulled it and will have it tested but with history of this system, Im looking for a replacement. Has anybody ever rebuilt / refurbished the original style regulator? Has there been success with a newer style?

Interested in good used one and maybe the rebuild kit if mine tests bad. History of my bus is its hard on regulators. A spare is a good thing.

Thanks GURU Randy!!

My bus alternator was doing a similar thing except with current oscillations of about 40 amp amplitude. Cured it by adding a #4 ground wire from one of the alternator case bolts to a ground stud that was directly connected to the cranking battery. Flattened the current oscillations right out, the alternator was not grounded well through the cradle mount. As my 81 year old all things electrical mentor tells me, "Son you can never have to many grounds" and with a BB he's absolutely right. Might be worth a try...…...

Thanks Andy, My amp fluctuations seem much bigger than 40 amps, probably double. It’s Spiking gauge maximum and dropping back down to normal. I shut bus down immediately to prevent something crazy from happening. I have an extra grounding wire as you but it goes to battery tray / chassis. Wonder if direct to battery neg terminal is better?Today I’m going to clean and inspect all connections around alt.

Max on a DN 50 is 300 amps I think.

Dave if you're still looking for a voltage regulator, I replaced my original old style 3-wire Delco with a 4-wire Transpo CN D698-186612V. The Transpo is adjustable to control alternator voltage output and the fourth wire is for battery feedback. Mine has worked perfectly for two years with a Delco 50DN and my current PennTex PX-833-12V air cooled alternator. You can get one from Elreg or possibly eBay.
