Default Looking forward to it, as usual!

"Highly rated, Kaibab Lake is one of the prettiest campgrounds in the state, with nice, big camp spaces, some pull-thru, pine trees, great fishing lake, ramada, close to town, etc., etc. And the Memorial Day Weekend is the optimum time of year there. Never hot, rarely too cool. And centrally located/interstate access/paved roads to campground. Beautiful! We just need to promote that stuff, increase attendance, and coordinate some activities. There’s so much to do there, and in the surrounding areas. For starters there’s a world-class tourist destination just an hour’s drive away. We could plan a rim hike or attend one of the guided talks or the tour the Kolb Brothers Photography Studio, etc. Then there’s William’s-centric attractions like Bearizona, the historic buildings self walking tour, and new stuff like The Big Toy Playground, the wine tasting bar, and the Zip Line. Just watching the steam train depart is fun, which they tend to bring out for Memorial Day, and the train museum at the depot is quite nice. We could visit the other beautiful lake south of town, and plan a picnic lunch at White Horse Lake. Plan a short hike on one of Bill Williams Mountain trails, or visit Elk Ridge Ski area, dine at their restaurant or see if they’re running their lift for summer scenic views. There’s also petroglyphs there, that I didn’t know about. Planes of Fame Air Museum is right in town. Deer Farm. Grand Canyon Caverns is just 66 miles away. And Lava River Cave is 1hr, 12 minutes. Many other attractions around Flag, of course, like the scenic lift, Walnut Canyon, etc., but even right in Williams there is lot’s to do and see, but our problem is low attendance. And that’s simply from lack of promotion. We need to talk it up,...early enough to reserve sites, and then plan some activities, and then talk those up for next year, etc. Last year a few of us went on that posted nature hike, right in the campground, and the guy was very knowledgeable and interesting. We walked over the dam toward the Aspen tree-laden meadow, and he told us all about the flora, fauna, and history of the area. He even had a bag full of taxidermy feet of various animals to identify tracking! And Williams has 52 restaurants now! So, we really don’t have to keep going to the same one for breakfast every year. The annual bike ride into town is really fun, because the ride is short and the weather is perfect, but it would be more fun if more attended. It could be the one time we all make a point of bringing our bikes and getting a little active. Riding around the campground is fun too. And watching the little parade could be more than just standing to watch the end after breakfast. We could plan breakfast earlier and bring chairs and really enjoy the parade. Not that it's all that exciting, but when we're all together, it can be fun. Also, there’s lots of things we could consider right in the campground like nicer potlucks with themes, perhaps a breakfast or lunch instead of dinner. Volleyball, badminton, horseshoes, corn hole etc. Charades. “Bring at least one story to the campfire to share” (the campfire can be of the gas-ring-fakelogs variety for smokefree enjoyment). I think we could build this annual rally into a large event, where we take over the whole campground!

There doesn't seem to be a lot of chatter on this one this year. But there must be a few attending, Loops A and B are full.

We got the last and worst 40 foot spot, B22 next to the outhouse. We'll be there, unless the bus breaks down on the obstacle course. We're going to be at Fort Tuthill for the Overland Expo the weekend prior: https://www.overlandexpo.com/west

Unfortunately we got a late start this year. This area is so beautiful it fills up fast and you cannot reserve a year in advance. This year due to work and other mishaps I missed the early registration. Also we won't be able to make it due to family commitments BUT I will be up in that area and will stop by for a potluck, run into town, or even another Deer Park experience with the kids. Don't forget the Grand Canyon Railroad is also there which makes a great day trip.

There are still plenty of slots in loops C, D, & E so don't hesitate.

Default Come on up!

Arrived yesterday (Mon) with plan to snag a walk-in site (backup plan was Camp Navajo military FAM camp). It worked out great! . The lake is down from last year but still higher than the year prior. No rain for months means Extreme No Burn rules are in effect with NO campfires . If anyone has a campfire-in-a-can, bring it and forget about needing firewood. Went into town this afternoon and it was VERY quiet. That’ll change in a few days. Cloudy and cool now, but supposed to be 80 & clear through the weekend. In other words, perfect! Wish you were here

Hey Van, What slot did you find, how long will you be there, and any others available you know of?

The sunny “walk-in” site in A-loop. I’d reserved the site next door for this past Sun thru Fri, but couldn’t get anything over the holiday. On Mon morning couple in the walk-in site next door left and I grabbed it thru the holiday. Love it when a plan comes together! Drove around the loops yesterday and it looks like ALL reservable sites are taken for next weekend. Not sure about walk-ins but the other one in A was taken by an SOB 40’er shortly after I moved and he said he’s here for the two week duration.

My backups were - Haven’t been over there but there is a close boondocking area listed on FreeCampsites.net (see pic) and several others. Besides those, there’s also the Camp Navajo military FAM Camp and Twin Arrows Casino parking lot (always available) on the other side of Flag. Bottom line is I was confident about finding something in the local area, push came to shove.

Crystal clear sunshine today - solar’s happy

If things go right at the transmission shop tomorrow, we’ll be spending the night in Williams and then driving to Colorado on Thursday. We’ll wave as we drive by.

Default Kaibab Lake Update as of Tues May 22 @ 10:15 am

According to Camp Host, lots of walk-in sites are available right now. She thinks if you get here NLT tomorrow and at the latest early Thur, there will be sites open. She added it’s best to arrive sooner rather than later. Whether a bird would fit or how level they are is the question. Almost half the CG sites are walk-ins. She pointed out a few on her board that’d fit a BB nicely. Asked her if I could “take” them by paying her and she said unfortunately NO, they must be occupied. Looks like a whole new Camphost crew since last year, all very nice

Arlin - why don’t you swing by KL and grab a site thru the weekend! KL is far and away better (and cheaper) than anything in town. Plus it’s < a 10 min drive to all the “action” in Williams...

(Sites cost $24/nite or $12/nite with the Geezer pass)

Great thought, but we have reservations for a month beginning Thursday at Mesa Verde RV Resort. If no issues with the transmission that require a delay, we’ll be in town for just the night. But, we’re looking forward to meeting everyone at Pine Mountain.
