I forgot about the GSP. No trucks were allowed on it when I was driving so it tends to just not register with me.

Baltimore is a nightmare depending on timing and DC is a nightmare pretty much any time. I had the misfortune of driving through ( or around) that every week for a year just a few years ago. During the day it's just too much traffic and crazy drivers. At 2 or 3 AM, the crazies are still out there but they think the speed limit is 120MPH.

I either do the Francis Scott Key bridge around Baltimore as the tunnel is off limits or I jump off 95 in Newark Del and follow 896S to 301 to 50 over the Chesapeake Bay bridge. The Bride/Tunnel is very cool but it dumps you into Norfolk. For me it just depends on how fast I'm looking to get south. I know these roads are scary for people in other parts of the country but for those of us born here these are the roads we learned to drive on. Weekend traffic south of the DC Beltway heading towards Fredericksburg is bad. Try to set it up so you do it late or early when everyone is heading into DC. You can go out 78W through NJ to Harrisburg PA and drop down 83 through York but talk about a unending ride and did I mention hills?

I spent a short amount of time on 95 from Richmond to DC last summer and I did not see very many trucks at all- which usually tells me I'm on a road I don't want to be.

I liked I81 much more. Avoid all those big cities.

FYI, the LAST thing you want to do is try the Chesapeake Bay Bridge until sometime in 2021. They have shut down 2 lanes westbound for major repairs. At night they shut it all down and all traffic is single lane on the old span. Backup is 15-20 miles.

I run the CBBT a lot but get on 1-64 East all the way to the end. It dumps you out almost to Suffolk. It goes around Norfolk. All good running unless the draw bridge is open. If I'm going to the Western Shore of VA I take I-64 West through the Hampton Roads tunnel. That's usually pretty congested but still usually only a 15-20 minute delay.
