Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Default Why no respect?

I noticed something the other day when we put the bus in the local car show. A few guys totally disrespected the 3208 Cat...like it was junk...and asked us when we changed it out and what we put in it's place. I know the 3208 is considered a "throw away engine" due to the fact it does not have replaceable cylinder sleeves, but that does not mean it is junk. I mean for God's sake this engine is 36 years old and still purring like a kitten and she's not alone. Am I missing something?

the 5.9 cummins is a throw away too, along with every gas engine built in the last 40 years.
Most people that talk smack about the Detroits or the Cats have never owned one.
But their mothers friends fathers lawn man knew a guy that had one and it was junk...

Nice, they seemed shocked we still had the original engine and that we were actually happy with it. I mean sure I love the sound of a good Detroit but only with a manual transmission. If we had but one complaint with the birds, it's that they all have automatic trans.

I too am a huge fan of the 3208. Both of mine have served me well. Cat allowed them to be installed into the wrong application in many instances which lead to failure. In an RV, they are sometimes driven like cars and also don't last. With proper care they seem to be fine.

A friend of mine who also has a 300HP FC recently met the VP of Wanderlodge, long since retired obviously. He was the guy that convinced Cat to give Blue Bird the 300HP version. Apparently Caterpillar was very selective on who got this engine, perhaps to ensure it was going to be installed correctly and with adequate cooling.

Not sure how that would work with the doghouse. No real space there. This is the only reason he continues to look at other buses, cause they are manual. I'm a BB girl, he'll never convince me otherwise.
