The only way to change the shift points is the use of a switch labeled Econ/Power, or there is a plug in Integrated chip that BB/ZF had that can change the shift points. Our BB ZF's are programmed for highway speeds. The 3208 , 300HPTAT is capable of 3000 rpm, with the overdrive it can hit 80mph.
As usual, Mr. Bill Pape has the numbers correct...3000 max RPM on the ATAAC 300 HP 3208 (camshaft has roller lifters). Read the last paragraph on page 2 for the straight dope.

When climbing a hill I try to get some good speed up and let the engine lug down to about 1600 rpm, then I press 3 (requesting a lower gear), and press the pedal to the floor - activating the kick down switch. It will usually downshift immediately. I can then repeat the process, lugging down and pressing 2, then pushing the pedal to the floor again signaling the downshift and rolling back on the throttle after the shift is complete. Selecting a lower gear only requests the transmission hold the gear on downshift.

This is my experience with the ZF. I am watchful on EGT and boost while lugging down. I find the ZF works the 3208 too hard. Those little main bearings don't like low RPM and maximum torque so I will back off, slow down and get the ZF to downshift. If I'm going 30MPH at the top of the hill, so be it.

I drove my 87 yesterday, specifically to figure out the kick down...

its unfelt as far as I can tell... but if I push the pedal to the floor, nothing changes. HOWEVER: when I am pushing it to the floorboard and proceed to push *quite a bit* harder, NO perceptible give or movement is taking place, but it definitely engages my kick down switch. and the trans jumps properly down and it behaves in a way I like and understand...

I'm not a fan of the switch action. BUT I will try to get used to it AS IS, as I now know it works but maybe I will see if there's a depth adjustment on the switch or mounting itself to alleviate the utter lack of feeling.

Maybe you have sand or cookie crumbs under the pedal?
Old carpet fur balls maybe?

I had an extra thickness of carpet under the pedal-would not downshift. Once this was removed it worked as advertised. The TPS can be adjusted by monitoring voltage on that wire.

So there's no way to totally manually shift a ZF ??

I was interested in a 1987 here locally before we found Good Ole Bird...

I like the 643 so far...

Driving the ZF is like a lifestyle change kind of like looking at a kid with a nose ring with a chain attached to his ear hard to get used to
