Default Metal shards on the magnetic plug

I changed the oil myself this weekend for the first time. Previously it was changed by a truck shop last year. When I cleaned off the plug there were two metal shards stuck to it. They looked like little pieces of stripped thread or something. I have no simptomes and I am beginning to suspect either the shop tech dropped the plug into the catch basin and picked up the shards, or the dumba#s guys at the transmission shop did a bad job removing the rear main seal when they replaced it at my request.

I sent an oil sample out for analysis, and hope it comes back normal.

It's always something.

its been my findings that little shards (is that a word?) are nothing to worry about.
stuff that bothers me is fine ground cast iron, brass or aluim.
Heres what I would do next, take the two old oil filters, and cut the both in half, pull the paper pleats out and see whats in the folds of the paper, this is where all the bad news lies...

Randy,
Thanks, I think! I will do the filter check tomorrow. I didn't notice any little flakes on the magnet, which was good news I think.

P.S.
Shard is really a word.

Shard: a broken piece of a brittle artifact

Gardner, I'm not the mechanic that Randy is, but I've changed oil hundreds of times in the last 50 years. Anytime I've found something other than soft metal powder on a plug, it's been because I was careless about where I laid the plug while the oil drained. In a truck shop, it's very likely to pick up something and not get wiped off before reinstalling.

I cut the tops off the filters today and pulled out the paper elements. In the folds there are a few specs of shiny metal, but nothing I would be concerned about. I put the paper in a plastic bag and will bring it to Rats for a professional diagnosis and show & tell.
