Default Toad for 78 BB

I found a 47 Willys jeep for a good price? I do not know how to tow and what to look for? we will look at it on Sun. 5/16/10, What to look for, it has a tow assembly on front and very low gears (5.xx). I have a Blue Ox assy.

Just a plain old towbar will do, place trans in neutral and transfer case in neutral, they are natural toads. They have been towed for years but with the short wheel base I would say 55-60 MPH max

If it has locking/unlocking front hubs it is a good idea to unlock them, so they free wheel and aren't turning the axles & differential. I have seen older Jeeps set up for towing with these on all four wheels. Makes them roll real easy.

Don't think there would be a problem towing but not much of a car for on the highway. Might only go 45 to 50 mph. Just consider how you would use the towed car. Not especial safe either. I'd spring for a newer Jeep.

I remember riding in my friends 64 Jeep (likely similar 4 cylinder) really not made for the highway even in those days.

Maybe this Jeep has all new "guts" if that's the case cancel my comments.

I appreciate all comments. I was thinking instead of buying a 5-6K ATV, I could get the jeep. It has Warren? hubs so those can be unlocked? we would use it around the property to pull trees, run the the store, 6miles away, and when In the RV can go places very slowly. What do you mean about the short wheel base? Any Other INFO you can give me???

Probably Warn hubs? Get some pictures either way, sounds cool!

60 MPH was probably pretty well unheard of sustained speeds back then for a jeep.

Probably some further inquire's around the net will get you a good feel for tow speeds.

Don't forget some pics!

Good luck!

I think those are Warn hubs. http://www.warn.com/index.shtml They are good hubs and and easy to lock/unlock. Saves a lot of wear and tear on the axles and differentials.

Yea, with the 5.38 gears, make sure the drive shaft(s) is well balanced. 45 - 60 mph is a more prudent speed. Make sure the tires are up to snuff also. Grade 5 or grade 8 bolts for the attaching hardware. Take your time and gain your experience gradually.

The shorter the wheelbase, the "twitchier" the vehicle is at speeds. Meaning, it will swap ends faster if you get it out of whack the faster you go.
