Default 87-89 dual groove PS pulley

While doing routine PM on our 89 FC I noticed the power steering belts need an adjustment after running only 5K miles since replacement. It seems that the belt in the outside groove (most forward) is much looser than the other belt on the power steering pump. When I replaced all 9 engine belts Mar 2007 I found that that same 'forwardmost' belt was the looser of the two.

The 2 groove pulley appears to need replacement. Any ideas on where to start as to locating the replacement? The pulley is 6.5" diameter and is stamped "For BB Pump Only" 81966.

Here's a couple of photos

dick,

i dont know why the pulley would need to be replaced?

You need to get "matched set" of belts..they sell them like that for the application that need 2 or 3 belts on the same size pulleys and they are selected out of the same mold when made.

Hi Woody:

When I bought the Gates belts at O'Reillys, I asked about buying a "matched set" and I was told that in todays world there is no such thing.

Years ago when I worked at an IH dealership...I plainly recall matched sets of belts.

Now the manufacturing process is so precise that tolerances are maintained to within 0.15" for belts up to 63" in length.

http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?br...ocation_id=559

I agree with with using only matched sets of belts, but think that outside pulley groove has become wider and it appears the belt rides lower in that groove. I'll try another new set of belts and keep an eye on them.

Thanks for the reply. Plan to take the radiator to the shop for cleaning and inspection tomorrow. My save opening the front again.

Hi Freedom
I just adjusted the belt on my 84-fc last week and it only has a single belt pulley.

Not sure about the old days, but I called Gates and an engineer told me that Green Stripe or NAPA Gold/Yellow belts are the same and no need to have a matched set.
The loose one will tighten and the tight one will loosen, with wear and heat.
Sounds great if this really happens.

John,

I believe that the dual groove pulley was on the later model FC's, as mine is a single groove also. Mike Hohnstein changed his over to a dual groove pulley on his FC, so it can be done.

if thats a stamped steel pulley it is possible that the belt slipped and overheated one groove in your 2 groove pulley, causing the angle to change.
i have seen that happen on single groove pulleys.
i think that you will have to buy a new pulley from BB.
