Default Intermittent water / pump replacement

For the past few days we've been having trouble with the water cutting out. It would shut off for 10 minutes or so then come back on. A few times I figured it was we were running low but now with a full tank I dove in to explore. The wire cap was melting and the water pump housing was at 210 degrees before I shut it off

So I figured I must have a short inside somewhere. Jabsco 36950-2000. I haven't looked into it its available but I figured if I was happy before the exact one should work if I can find it.

My questions:

I know it's been discussed, but are there better replacements? I've seen some folks aren't happy with what they put in.

Should there have been a breaker that tripped? The wirecap melted so I'm obviously pulling some amps.

Anything else I should check before I put a new pump in?

I hate those pumps. I replaced mine with a Shurflo 4048 and cranked the pressure up to about 50 psi. It's quieter (not silent), flows more, and higher pressure. The old Jabsco I had was so noisy and had a lot of pulsation. None of that with the 4048.

The 4048 uses up to 10 amps and the Jabsco is rated for 6, but the same wiring is sufficient.
