John, Ensure the points are not closed when checking for ground at the coil.

I pulled the red coil wire off the points connection completely and the coil has continuity with the case. However when reassembled and turned, I get a small shock off the coil. Not enough to hurt, less than an electric fence, but enough to flicker my eyelid. I would think if it was shot, I would get no shock at all.

If that sucker was working it would do more than flicker your eyelid.

Default Baby's all better

Put a new coil in after speaking to Rudy Calin at rebuiltmags.com in Minnesota. I got cold just talking on the phone.

Coil is a R2477C, 55 bucks plus a few bucks for shipping. He also sent a replacement hold-down screw that I buggered up.

Replacement was easy, I marked where the gears were prior to removal, did not turn over engine and put it back on just the same, did not have to re-time it. Incidently, I checked the points prior to ordering the coil, seemed fine, turned out they were a little worse than I originally thought. Cleaned up fine, but I wonder if they may have been a contributing factor. Runs fine now.

Now back to my familiar underused carb problems.
