Question Replacement Battery Chargers

All this electrical talk has me thinking about our onboard battery charger. Not sure how old it is but wondered if there was anything better on the market to protect our new batteries, that we should look into.
Sure I could pull up old threads on the topic, but I want to have current opinions on the matter.
Currently we have an "IOTA DLS-55, series M"
Don't know if this is one of those battery boilers or not.

Yes that is a battery boiler.. thats what was in my bird when I got it.. it quit on me.. I replaced the IOTA with a xantrex inverter/charger. I did that because I have a friend who was a xantrex dealer. I think I might go with a Magnum if the xantrex dies or I decide its time for another upgrade. The one thing I have been experiencing is the xantrex will just shut off charging for some reason. Luckily I have my bird here at home and I go in and out of it from time to time. Just noticed today that the charger was off again.. not sure what is causing it.

I can fix you up with a used inverter/charger,belongs to Mark B. it was working fine 2 weeks ago when he updated to a newer fancier inverter.
$500 plus the ride on the brown truck.

Know you've invested a lot of time in your bus. And talked about full timing.

If it was me, I would buy something like this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnum-Ener...0AAOSwn2leg6IQ

In fact I followed this same advice a few years ago. Very high quality unit that is customizable through the remote. And with replaceable components if something fails.
I spent about the same (1/2 price of new) on a used unit from a reputable seller. Zero issues. I've also configured it to work with solar and other chemistry batteries.

Prior, I bought new AIMS inverter. And another off-brand and had two failures before the Magnum units. Those cheaper ones were a waste of money since they failed quickly but also out of warranty.
If you are thinking of moving to Lithium batteries one day, you might see if you can find a deal on a Victron inverter / charger. Since they are newer, I think you'd have a harder time getting a used one.

good luck,
Doug

Thanks Doug and Randy. Will consider our options. I can tell you though we ha e no desire to go solar or lithium. Only solar we might consider would be to keep the batteries trickle charged during storage times, if we find ourselves with no power to plug in to. I personally dont trust lithium....and yes I enjoy wearing my tin foil hat.

I bought a new convertor from these guys last year:

https://powermaxconverters.com/

Florida company, they answered the phone when I called. I told them what I had and what I wanted to do and they made a recommendation. In fact, they recommended a cheaper model then what I figured I needed to have. I wanted something that would not cook my AGM batteries and powerful enough to give a fast charge to minimize generator run time when dry camping. I bought a 100 amp charger for about $150 shipped to my house.

For our needs I'd do the same thing again.

[COLOR="black"]I am assuming it is also a smart charger and will shut off when not needed? Ours currently has the little smart charger box that is lit up.

Holy cow...what a PITA!

I just want a basic system the we put in place, make all the connections and let it do it's job of smart charging the batteries as needed or converting the power to charge the batteries if we are on generator power or have it plugged into an extension chord on shore power. I don't need/want a remote. I don't want one that needs to be programmed.
