Exclamation FIRE!!!!!!!!M380 exhaust fire!

Today Cliff and I were running together across Ca. and it was hot,102 degrees and we were in the mountains.
Late this afternoon about 5pm we were climbing a grade in 3rd gear, flat out and it had been a long pull.
As we rounded a curve i looked back and could see lots of smoke coming out of Cliffs M380.
At the same time Cliff radioed me saying he had smoke!
I told Carol to get the fire extinguisher out of the bedroom, and started looking for a place to pull over.
We got stopped and i grabbed a 2nd F.E. and we bailed out and ran back to Cliffs coach.

The smoke was coming out of the roof area around the exhaust pipe.
And out of the engine area.

We opened the engine cover and could see nothing burning, the smoke was still coming out of the roof around the exhaust pipe.
The M380 does not have a ladder on the back, its a helpless feeling looking up and thats all you can do.

I ran around to the door of the coach, yelled at Barbara to grab her valubles, then i ran back to the rear where Cliff was and we started un-hooking his toad.
Carol and i had both tried to call 911 but we had no service.
Carol was running from house to house trying to find someone to help.

Believe it or not,Carol came back with a ladder!
Good thinking!

Cliff had hooked up a hose to his spigot in his water bay and i took it and started squirting water up on the roof, hoping the water would run down around the exhaust pipe.

I had been inside the coach and the wall in the bedroom was too hot to touch,i emptied the closet and tried to get some air to cool the walls off.

Before Carol got back with the ladder i had decided to open the bedroom window and i leaned out, sitting in the window and Cliff handed me the hose and i could reach the roof and get more water into the vent around the pipe.
The smoke stopped and about that time a few cars had stopped and someone called 911.

In a short time fire trucks started arriving.
We placed the ladder against the coach and a firemen went up onto the roof, looking into the vent he could see no fire or smoke.

Cliff tossed him a heat gun and a flashlight, the temps were in the 150 degree range,no fire,no smoke.

The carpet on the bedroom closet walls is now discolored from the heat.

Basically, the firemen had to do nothing, but they were there for us.

The quick thinking of Cliff getting the hose out,and Carol getting the ladder from a guys house saved the coach.

The guy Carol got the ladder from came over and we were all trying to decide what to do next, the coach is not hurt.

Looking down into the vent we could see the insulation was not attached to the walls of the chase where the muffler goes, the insulation was falling down around the muffler and thats what was burning.

The ladder guy offered his shop to us for the night, along with any tools we might need.
WE moved across the street to his shop and i got on the roof and removed the grill thats around the stack,Cliff found a stick and i poked the insulation down and out the bottom into the engine compartment.
The insulation was burned and in bad shape,we have pics.

I do believe this insulation had been added to the chase,it was duct taped and glued with red silicone sealer to the walls.
The tape had released and the insulation fell onto the muffler.

This insulation was foil over what looks like cotton bedding,no wonder it caught fire.

Talk about a lucky day,Cliffs coach was a minute away from burning to the ground..

I had a similar situation last year in my 2003 LXI. I only had smoke however from the foam insulation which also entered the overhead cabinets in the bedroom. The muffler had an insulation blanket which I believe traps condensation and mositure causing the muffler to rust over time. When replaced the muffler I did not use an exhaust blanket and do not notice any extra heat in the bedroom after running.

Thank goodness this happened today. Hate to think of Cliff and Barbara alone and this happening. Glad you are all safe as is the Bird.

Barbara packed a bag,she had important stuff, her meds, cliffs Jammies and other important stuff.
We had the toad unhooked and moved way back.

The loose insulation stopped the draft that the chase would have normally, there was no way for he heat to go up the chase, plus the insulation laying on the muffler burning sure didnt help the temps in the bedroom.

So,after a few adult beverages we are settled in for the night.
Our heart rates are returning to normal.
I think we are set to go at the crack of dawn tomorrow,we plan on driving early to stay cooler.

Hair Cut

No wonder Cliff had a fire. Someone added that cloth insulation. Not a very wise choice at all.

The insulation was a bad addition!
We all thought it was going up in flames.
Thats why we un-hooked the toad and Barbara packed her bags.

Cliffs coach has had the muffler replaced,so its not a muffler issue.
We don't know who added the insulation.

The haircut was 8-9 days ago,it was short then!
Cliffs is retired Army,he told me "it looks good, son!"
