Default Mike Hohnstein's Close Call

I just got a phone call from Mike Hohnstein, he is on his way west to meet up with his brother to deliver a trailer to him half way from Idaho, he is making good progress today but yesterday he had what could have ended up as another disastrous fire on his FC 'Bird. It seems that he heard strange noises coming from the underside of the coach and stopped to check things out and found the hydraulic pump for the HWH levelers had come loose from its mounting under the entrance step and was dragging along by the attached plumbing, he managed to secure it back in place, but when he started down the Interstate again, the coach was acting very strange as the CAT engine and his newer style Allison transmission were acting up, so he stopped again and took a more thorough look under there and found numerous battery cables had come loose from their brackets that had been holding them in place where they cross under the bus from left to right and were dangerously close to the drive shaft. He tried posting last night but couldn't get his laptop to cooperate and had a very sleepless night. When he can get the laptop back online he will follow up with more information, but suggested that we all take a look at the HWH hydraulic pump mounts and he is going to be adding fuses to his cables when he gets a chance, so I felt this was an appropriate thread to remind us again about this issue.

Here are some reference threads that have related information;

On the mid-80's PT 36, 38 and 40 models, the power to that pump comes from a solenoid mounted to the front pf the inside fender near the right front tire. Those solenoids and the pump are subjected to a ton of road spray and dirt. Anyone in the northern climates who has encountered salted roads should take a close look at those two solenoids and the ground strap on their pump to make sure that the cabling and lugs are intact and making good connections.

Premature I guess until Mike posts but I am wondering how the symptoms described would be tied in with the damage? Why would the engine and trans act up and give clues to the deeper problems?

mikes trans is a computer controlled 3060.
If it gets weird voltage or low voltage it will not work properly.
I suspect his trans was getting low voltage or voltage spikes.

A good reminder for me that I should block up the bus and do a look,poke & tug inspection and grease job for the season!

Folks...I know I'm preaching to the choir, but avoid the temptation to do "just a quick look" and take safety shortcuts working under your coaches.
