Jay,
The only conclusion I can come to is that there is a rain water leak hitting the condenser coils and cooling them.

First thing I would do is insure the air flow in the side vent, up past the condenser coils and out the roof vent is not blocked by anything, like a birds nest or mouse nest, etc. Then look for the water leak. If the air flow is good and the coils are clean, your refrigerator may be on its last legs and it takes real cool air or moisture to get it to work at all.

Many people also place a fan in the compartment to blow air up through the coils to increase the efficiency.

I am not an expert, but I try.

I found a great place for a refrigerator rebuild. I pulled the unit, put it in the back of my HHR drove it to them and two hours later they had rebuilt it, tested it and had me loaded up and gone. Cost was less than half of what a new one cost and I didn't have to cut any holes, rebuild any cabinetes or have to replumb or rewire. The web link is http://www.rvfridge.com/index.htm. They are located near Little Rock, Arkansas. Good luck............................
