Default Help! a newbie with first real issue. Oil pressure drop? and no acceleration.

Hello all. We have a 1984 35FC with Cat 3208. Bought her in Florida two days ago and have been motoring to Wisconsin. Zero mechanical issues.
Stopped this morning in southern Illinois to winterize and noticed oil was low so we filled that too.

We made it Rockford (350 BUMPY miles) and as we're trying to go up an incline she just stopped accelerating. The turbo never kicked in and oil pressure gauge was low. We got to a gas station max speed of 45. Oil pressure back to normal.

Opened the doghouse and checked oil. Everything looks good. Typing this real-time so we're not thinking oil anymore.... But the we saw this wire was disconnected and it looks like it was to this ground. What do you think? Could this be to the turbo and it came loose? Worth connecting and checking or stay away?

Thanks for your help

I have had reduced power 3 times in two different motorhomes, (Cummings, and DD) and both times it was a dirty Racor Diesel filter. Might change out all fuel filters and see if things change. Just happened to me last week. New filter and all good for a trip across the state this past weekend.

The turbo works with exhaust gas temperature so the more fuel you burn or more load on the engine, the more the boost will go up. Now, regarding the turbo; do you have a boost pressure gauge? Keep in mind, the FC is underpowered for it’s weight and will slow down when going up an incline, a hill or mountain. Mine will almost slow to a crawl when going up an incline especially with all the weight i tow. Are you towing a vehicle?

I know how it can be when you're new. The idea of changing out the fuel filters can be intimidating. That being said, once you do it successfully you gain a ton of confidence. You should have a RACOR filter, possibly located on in a left side bay near the propane tank. You also have a spin-on fuel filter near the engine. There are some basic guidelines and if you follow those it should be uneventful.

To confirm, you said your bus will only go 45MPH? What were the RPM's at this speed?

The 3208 is slow by today's standards as already mentioned. Fuel filter and air filter would be two things to look at.

The broken wire is likely nothing to worry about or related to the issue you are having.

Update, we think the exhaust gate on the turbo was stuck open. We're back on the road and all is well.

Just to be safe we will do a full inspection and change fuel filters before we take her out again. Almost home.

Thank you!

Maybe I am wrong but I don't think 3208's have a waste-gated turbo on any model. Marcelino will correct me if this is true or not.

Ehh,no.
unless you have a turbo like nothing i have ever seen on a 3208 you don't have a gated turbo.

On my 78 FC it lost power, at the time I was very concerned. It would barely climb any hill. Turned out to be a dirty air filter. We had driven throught the Borrego Springs area, lots of dust.

I don't have much to add here, and I don't have an FC, but if you need any help let me know. Are you under way or stuck in Rockford tonight?
