Default Goodyear G159 Tires

Goodyear RV Tire Linked to Multiple Deaths Is Still on Motorhomes, Listings Indicate

Quote:
Goodyear G159s—tires linked to hundreds of RV crashes over the past quarter century that left at least 95 people dead or injured, according to court records and documents reviewed by Consumer Reports.

The G159 was allegedly not designed to be driven at highway speeds for extended periods because it could become unusually hot and experience tread separation.

The last G159's were made in 2003. Anyone that has a blowout on one in 2021 pretty much deserves it.

I have never been a Goodyear fan. This was probably not Goodyear's fault, but that of the quartermaster at our GHQ, who purchased Goodyear winter tread tires. Maybe they weren't rated for the speeds we drove, I really don't know. But twice back in the early 70s I was on an emergency run and blew the tread clear off of my car and at 120-130+ mph it is a real thrill One of my buddies had one let go and the tread blew through the fender well and tore the hinge off of the trunk and the trunk lid blew off I'm sure Goodyear probably had some kind of speed rating on that tire and we exceeded it routinely and finally something had to give. However, ever since I have never owned a Goodyear tire.

On our fleet, we have never had issues with Goodyear tires that were unique to Goodyear (over several million miles), but in this instance I'm not making an argument either way. I only wanted to point out that if anyone is still actively using a 19+ year old tire, they have completely disregarded their safety already.

Steve,i wonder if the extreme heats down here cause different wear patterns on tires?
Or maybe it was just a run of a certain size that didn't work well?
Remember the slant 6 mopar engines?
Down here we had broken exhaust manifolds on those engines all the time.
The Dodge dealer had a stack of them (new) in stock at all times.
One of my friends was a dodge mechanic that moved down here from NY,he told me he had never seen a broken manifold on a slant 6 in his life, until he moved south.
But i agree with you on the tire age thing, its time for me to get some new steer tires...

We have seen weird wear on all sorts of tires, but it seems to be that based on our usage, some models exhibit poor wear patterns and some models don't, but that seems [to me] to be the case across the manufacturers we have used, which is primarily Goodyear, Bridgestone, Toyo, Sumitomo, and some Michelins.

The G156 was a bad tire. GY at some point realized that, but i'm not going to make a case either way beyond saying that the G156 was a bad tire, and there shouldn't be any left on the road because they have been out of production for almost 20 years.
