Default The @#^&* sofa

The jacknife sofa will not fully retract, or fully extend, I've crawled under it, I've held back up while looking in from above, there is no foreign objects in the way and no loose screws jamming things. I could really care less about extending it, what bothers me most is that it will not fully close and the electric heater putting most of its heat right up to wood and carpeting, its far from safe imho.

Comfort wise its a sucky sofa, far too narrow for comfortable napping. If I had to guess, its been recovered with a thicker foam and maybe that it why it does not function properly, maybe I'm wrong.

Any suggestions for a fix, or replacement, would be appreciated.

can you get a pic of the sofa?
The style i'm thinking you have has a double back section?
so when you pull it out the back makes up half of the bed?
It has cabinet type drawer slides under the bottom section?

Pics below. First pic is as retracted as it gets. Second pic shows the drawer slide is not fully retracted, the seat cushions at this point are against the cushions against the wall. 3rd pic shows full extension, if I get cushions against wall to come down the center cushions overlap the seat cushions. 4th pic shows steel hinge assembly between fold out cushions.

OK<thats what i was thinking you had.
I have seen the seat belts get tangled up on top of the heater or the ac duct (if you have cruiseairs).
I have also seen the straps that connect the back to the bottom unhooked and get jammed.
the 3rd think i have seen is a screw come out of the draw slides and make the slide jam,the screw was in the track.
All in all, thats a good couch set up.
Made by BB.
If the straps that hook the bottom to the back are still attached, unhook them and see if the bottom will slide out.
The straps are held with quarter turn catchs.

Yes I have Cruisairs, seat belts are dangling under the sofa seats, but do not seem to be interfering with closing.
I have also seen the straps that connect the back to the bottom unhooked and get jammed.
There are NO straps connecting back to bottom, only indication there ever were any is pictured below, yet different style than you describe, and nothing for them to attach to.

I've run hands down both slides and not finding any screws standing proud.

Without having removed/installed one of these, is it possible to get the fold down section in backwards? Ie cushions that should fold against wall are now the back cushions? I think this thing was re-muddled once upon a time, maybe not heavily, but enough that I find things that are just wrong.

Its been years since i had one of those out.
I don't understand how you can see the hinge.
Do you have a loop strap to help pull the back up when its folded down?
The loop should be between two of the cushions on the middle section, when folded down.

Does the pic below look right? If I use both legs to shove sofa against wall all I'm doing is collapsing the cushions behind the sofa, when I let off it springs back. The latches to keep sofa retracted had already been pulled off when I got it, 2 screws per latch is not enough to keep sofa retracted.

I'm thinking pull that 3rd row of cushions completely (they seem to be worthless in retracted and extended positions), the back cushions overlap the seat cushions by 6", so moving them up against wall would make sofa more nappable.

To see hinge, I slide hand under back (where your back would rest as a sofa) cushion and lift. No, no straps.

We need help from someone with the same couch.
If the back is not attached to the bottom, you should be able to hold the back in place and slide the bottom all the way out,can you do that?
If not,the glides are wrong or installed wrong.

I yanked on it and got it out a little more, the back cushions still seem a bit high, I'm thinking it was re-upholstered with thicker foam.

Second pic is how I see the hinge.

I really have no interest in a fold out bed, if I don't know them well enough to sleep in my bed, I don't want them in my home

Inspecting what is under the sofa I see the electric heater is mounted into a wooden box I'm at a loss for words..........
