Default Torque: It's the Law

I found this today and had not seen it before, I thought it might be worth sharing. I would also bet everyone of us may have an over torqued stud.

John you lose your bet at least in my case. I have a complete set of new torque wrenches, a X10 torque multiplier and a 6 foot torque wrench. I always check the nuts, lugs etc before LUBRICATING the wheel properly and the threads and then torqueing the nuts etc.

I suppose I will get a comment on this but I was and still am a certified Metrologist and at one time calibrated and repaired torque wrenches and other sensitive test equipment including everything electronic.

You are correct however that most wheels are torqued incorrectly and in fact are over torqued with those monster 1 inch impact wrenches. Its rare that I have not had to ask them to use a torque wrench on each wheel. Its amazing how some shops get defensive when you ask that that question

Tom,

How do you like your X-12? I just bought one off Craigslist for $175 in L.A. I took it apart, cleaned out the old lube and repacked it with moly grease with some gear lube mixed in. Not bad for a $600 tool.

Anybody have experience with these? I was thinking about getting some. I assume they could be painted silver.

Lots of trucks run them here in Ontario, the fine for losing a wheel here $5000.00 for a light truck and $50,000.00 for a big truck, not sure where a coach would fit into that. I am guessing that using these markers is a way to explain in court that you at least were trying to keep your wheels tight.

90% of the trucks coming into my warehouse have the pointers on the lugs.
