My generator came with an injection pump painted olive drab. The Perkins engine has been checked and mechanically it is fine. It has new injectors, but it always has smoked a little black smoke and runs a little rough. My long time expert mechanic and I are concerned the pump may have been replaced with one that has the wrong specs.
I need a legible pic of an '85 Kohler 12.5KW w/Perkins 4-108 engine injection pump tag. I would take one for an '84 or '86 if no '85s are available. I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO READ THE NUMBERS ON THE TAG. We can compare a known good tag to the one I have and make sure it is right. I am going to have it rebuilt but but don't want it rebuilt to the wrong specs. Evidently, there are quite a few little changes that can be made to the pumps depending on the application. My mechanic works on a lot of these generators on boats. He says this one is acting like the pump is out of spec. Thanks! TOM

Tom,the Perkins has about twice the HP thats required to run the genny.
Which means you can't really load the engine enough to make it burn clean and not run rough. I had one of those gennys for 10 years,i did injectors and a valve job,i changed the pump timing and all kinds of stuff. I could make it run quiet and pretty smoth by advancing the timing, but when it was cold it smoked like crazy. The pump specs may be adjustable, but my good friend and pump expert told me to leave it alone. So unless yours is way worse than mine was theres not much you can do with it. Plus, those old engines were built ages ago, nobody cared if they smoked or ran rough!!

Yeah Randy, I know they smoke, but this one smokes worst than the other 2 I've had a way worse the Massey Ferguson tractor. And it runs rough enough to miss under no load. The pump is leaking around the top cap and needs rebuilt anyway. If it was the right color I would just built it to the existing tag but the olive drab worries me. Perhaps some PO got in a jam and replaced the original pump with the only one he could find????
That's why I'd like to see an original tag. TOM

Your eyes are better than mine! I do think the last 3 digits of the first# are 501 not 150 Typo maybe? You may be right on the second # I can see the GP now that you point it out, I just don't trust what I'm seeing! LOL! Good call on the last number! It would still be nice to have a little better pic if I can get it. Is this gonna be like a bunch of inebriated guys looking at the clouds? 1st guy "I see a duck right there! See it?" 2nd guy "Yeah, that does kinda look like a duck" 3d guy "That's a sho' nuff duck right there!!" ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() TOM

Thanks Len. Those are close to what we have. Maybe someone will chime in with an '85.
