Default Need a little Help with the HWH Levelers

Well, I've got things back together but I still have an unresolved problem. Talking front leveler one side working one not. Problem seems to be that the actuator piston is pushing the jack beyond vertical. This results in the piston running off of the pivot cylinder and binding up the jack not allowing it to retract. Is there an adjustment to control how far that piston comes out of the actuator?

I had the jacks off of the bus and the mounting brackets. Had the slop fixed in the mounts as discussed but I still have this unresolved problem.

Any thoughts- help would be appreciated. Also there is what I would assume is a mercury switch that plays into this? I fooled with that a little and didn't seem to have any influence one way or the other on the operation. I can be reached at my cell number 717 816 1836 if you have some pointers. Thanks in advance. I am going to go home and do some reading and see if I can help myself. Maybe with I little help from my friends.

John,
Try this thread. I know your "crew" is out having fun so they may be slow to respond and I did not want ya hangin! if that thread doesn't help just search on HWH levelers like I did...tons of them, may be some gold in there for you!
My apologies but my system is different so I am pretty much useless as your crews backup!

After doing some research and further work under the bus (man I gotta take some weight off the old belly hardly fits) I have come to the conclusion that the actuator piston assembly is bad. There is an adjustment procedure which I tried to no avail so I removed the actuator cylinder and will send it to HWH for a rebuild. I think the problems are internal to that part of the system. As soon as you hit the extend button that actuator flies out and passes the pivot point. Everything else looks good so I am going to go on the assumption that its the actuator. Had the one on the other side rebuilt and that's working so I think the evidence is there.

Called HWH this morning. Talked to the nicest little girl there. She is sending me parts. Boy it's rare to dial a number and get to the right person on the first ring. (Now she did put me on hold for a couple minutes) but when she got to me she immediately knew what I needed and within a minute had me fixed up with parts ordered had my credit card information taken and the deal completed. Boy I hope this does the trick for me. This has not been a easy fix all things considered. Getting under there to work on the stuff hard. Getting the springs on and off, hard. Getting the bolts loosen, hard. Getting the dirt off the body when finished, hard. As long as it works out in the end? If it doesn't I am really going to be disappointed.

Hi John
As per our phone conversation a few weeks ago, did you remove the mounts and install new bushings. If you did, did they bore the new hole straight thru and NOT off center. When we did mine, I was extremely careful to keep the new bushings as centered as possible. If they were bored a little towards the front or rear of the center line, it would cause the entire cylinder to be reinstalled in a rotated position. This would keep the kick down rod from hitting the proper spot on the roller. If the entire cylinder rotated to the rear, the kick down rod would then miss the roller and slide past it. The kick down rod missing the roller is why I pulled the mounts off and installed new bushings. I had already replaced the roller assembly, but that did not cure the problem. This led to the removal and installation of new bushings. It has worked like new since then.

OK John, keep us posted on your progress. I've never seen a damaged actuator. Except for the time mine slid so far past the roller that it actually bent.

John,

I am watching your thread but have no experience in your issue.

Good luck with the fix.

Default She's Fixed

I posted on the RATS thread as well.

I got the actuator from HWH yesterday.. Bolted her on and everything seems to be working as new now. I think the problem was in fact the actuators. I believe there was damage to the adjustment mechanism which was letting the thing take the jack past vertical. Once that happened the ram passed the pivot point locking the thing up so that it would not retract. I did fix the mounts which never looked all that worn to me but while I had the mounts and springs off the bus why not. They certainly removed some of the play in the mount but I just have not been convinced in my situation that the mount was the trouble. (but it could have been part of it) The reason I think the mount was Ok was because any wear if it had actually occurred was completely symmetrical. No sign of galling or elliptical off center stuff like others have found. But it's hard to know. Regardless it seems all is well the ends well.

I am pleased as punch that I was able to accomplish this and I REALLY appreciate the help and advice given.

One more "thing" checked off the list. Transmission retarder will wait until next year.

Good for you John, you finally got that jack fixed.
Didn't this start about a year ago at the Hershey Rally?
